we are growing, not living to meet your expectations

parents and adults need to understand that teenagers are growing individuals who are beginning to understand themselves, develop their own beliefs, and make decisions about their future. we are not little kids who need every thought and action controlled for us. we are at a stage in life where we are learning to think critically, question things, and understand the world from different perspectives. we may not know everything, and we still have a lot to learn, but that does not mean our opinions are meaningless or that we are incapable of making decisions. being a teenager does not mean we should automatically be treated as if we cannot think for ourselves. we can respect our parents without agreeing with everything they say, appreciate their guidance without letting it define our entire identity, and acknowledge their experiences without assuming that their way of thinking is the only correct one. parents need to realize that their role is to guide us as we grow, not to control who we become. we are developing our own personalities, values, interests, and perspectives, and we deserve the space to discover them. just because we think differently does not mean we are being disrespectful or ungrateful. sometimes, we simply see things differently, and that should be enough reason for adults to listen instead of immediately dismissing us. we are not asking to know everything or to be free from every responsibility. we are asking to be treated with understanding and to have our voices taken seriously. if adults expect us to become mature and independent, they need to give us opportunities to make decisions, express our thoughts, and learn from our experiences. we cannot develop independence if every decision is made for us, and we cannot learn to trust our own judgment if we are constantly made to feel that our opinions are wrong. we are old enough to have our own perspectives, even if we are still young enough to need guidance. being a teenager means gradually learning how to stand on our own, and that process requires trust, patience, and freedom to grow. parents should not expect us to become independent adults while treating every disagreement as disobedience. providing for us is a parental responsibility, not a transaction that gives them unlimited authority over our thoughts, beliefs, and personal decisions. we can appreciate everything they do for us without owing them unquestioning obedience. at the end of the day, we are the ones who will eventually live our own lives, make our own choices, and face the consequences of our decisions. our parents can guide us, but they cannot expect us to remain dependent on their judgment forever. we are not simply extensions of our parents, and we do not exist just to fulfill their expectations. we are individuals who deserve the opportunity to discover who we are and decide what kind of future we want for ourselves. being young does not mean having no voice, and being a teenager does not mean we have to put our own identity aside just because an adult believes they know better.
