We are setting ourselves up for a new dark age

With the rise of social media, and memories being stored in places like that and electronic clouds and the like, I do believe that we kinda setting ourselves up to be another "dark age" in history. The medieval dark ages are a period of time that we don't have much information on primary source wise. Of course we have stuff in the archaeological record, but written and primary sources from that time are very rare and hard to come by. Hence: the dark age. (We call them the early middle ages now, but we can't have that title for ourselves now can we. Besides, I use the term in regards to the lack of knowledge we have about the era :^] )

So where I'm getting at with this is the fact that since we rely on technology so much to store our information we will most likely have very few primary documents and such for historians to look back on in the future. This will create a huge gap in what they know about this time period. They'll know of the pandemic most likely, as well as the happenings of Important People, but the study of the lives of day to day people will have very little to go off of. That's kind of the reason why I don't like working with medieval European stuff academically. The sources we have, especially from the early medieval era (i.e. the dark ages) are horribly vague and confusing, and ours probably will be too.

And you know, I'm not fully against technology or anything, but people tend to forget that the technology we have today is not going to be around forever. Print your photos, print out messages from loved ones and put them in a journal or something, archive your journals or schedules or logs, just don't let things that are important to you disappear.

Anyway I'm gonna hop off my soapbox now.

(BTW the reason I care about this, is because history is a huge part of my field. I do not care about anyone's nihilistic views of humanity and whether or not we are important or even "good enough" to warrant having our current events and culture studied, don't bring that shit onto this post. To someone in any history or history-adjacent field, this stuff is important.)

Kudos: 10
