What does freedom actually mean in a world of media?

Instagram, TikTok, snapchat. Everything is recorded, put online, and scrutiny never goes away in this day and age. No one is themselves, it is all what people want to see. We all have a version of ourselves created to impress, the side that is shown to the rest of the population. It is a prison of screens and lies. Us as humans have been trapped in between constraints that have been disguised as 'trends'. No one is free, no one can escape the crushing pressure that comes with media.

Freedom, by definition, is the power or right to act, speak, and make choices without external hinderance, constraint, or control. The thing that has the most control and influence on the mind is social media. There is a constant pressure to be perfect for the camera, be perfect to those who see you. That is not freedom, that is a cage. To not be able to be who you are, to have to hide ones true personality, that is constraint and control. Everything is tracked, recorded, and posted. There is nothing to promote free thinking, reality, living without fear of criticism. When choices are made, they are made with trends in mind, what others would think, what they could do that would be 'aesthetically pleasing' which is really just 'what is social media telling me to do?'
"Filters have made the idea of beauty unattainable for people everywhere. Anyone could change their face, their bodies, and on a platform as big at TikTok or Instagram, younger kids get sucked into the prison too." Maeva Smith explained after being asked about the trap that is social media.

Every minute, 528,000 photos are sent on Snapchat, 456,000 tweets are shared, and 47,000 photos are posted on Instagram. (B. Marr) Everything is being shared, nothing is private, people feel a need to inform the internet.

Freedom comes from accepting that not everything has to align with what media tells us. Once we let go of the vice that is trends and accept ourselves for who we are, not who the internet tells us to be, then we will be truly free in a world where everything is documented.
