YOU DON'T FIND YOURSELF. YOU BUILD YOURSELF.
People often talk about "finding themselves" as though somewhere inside us there is a finished version of who we are, hidden and waiting to be discovered.
I'm not sure I believe that.
I don't think we find ourselves.
I think we build ourselves.
We are built from decisions.
From mistakes.
From the people we loved and the people we had to leave behind.
From the things we once believed with absolute certainty and eventually learned to question.
From every time life forced us to begin again when we would rather have stayed exactly where we were.
And perhaps that's why I'm not particularly interested in becoming the person I "was meant to be."
Who decided that person existed?
There are versions of me that no longer exist.
Things I once wanted that mean nothing to me now.
Ideas I defended that I would question today.
Paths I thought I would follow forever that eventually disappeared beneath my feet.
I don't see that as failure.
I see it as evidence that I lived.
Life changes us.
Sometimes gently.
Sometimes brutally.
And no, I don't believe suffering automatically makes us stronger. Some experiences simply hurt. Some wounds leave scars we never asked for.
There is nothing beautiful about suffering for its own sake.
But we still get to decide what we build from what remains.
That's where I think darkness becomes interesting.
Darkness isn't necessarily evil.
Sometimes darkness is simply the place where the answers we used to have stop working.
Where certainty disappears.
Where nobody can tell us which direction to take next.
And eventually our eyes adjust.
We begin to see things we couldn't see before.
Not because somebody handed us a light.
Because we learned how to see.
Maybe that's what growing older really is.
Not accumulating answers, but becoming comfortable enough to admit how many questions remain.
Not becoming unbreakable, but learning that being broken doesn't mean being finished.
Not discovering some hidden "true self," but consciously choosing which pieces of everything we've experienced deserve to become part of the person we're building.
And that person isn't finished either.
Neither am I.
Hopefully I never will be.
Because perhaps the point of life was never to discover who we are.
Perhaps it is to decide who we want to become.

NO TE ENCUENTRAS.
A veces suavemente.
Yo tampoco.
Espero no estarlo nunca.
