cause OOOOOOOH I started this series a few days ago and I've been INTO ITTTTTTT!!!!!! literally read nonstop for like 24 hours and now I'm trying to chill tf out and pace myself
granted they're not very long books, a little less than 300 pages each, so I probably could've finished the whole damn series by now if I didn't savor them. (and stopped eating and drinking) but I like savoring books, I like rereading the good parts, idc that it takes more time, I wanna ENJOY IT!!
and I sure have been enjoying this series, which was totally expected because I love this author's other books. they're not the most literately challenging books in the world, y'know? but they're great little gay romance books for me to inhale in a single sitting like a freak
I started a kindle unlimited subscription (free trial..) just to read this series because I'm that into it
I've been alternating between reading on my phone while laying in bed curled around it like a shrimp, and using my jailbroken ipad mini gen 2 as an e-reader (which is about all it's good for)
anyways this series is about guys who fall in love with princes, it's a queer-normative fantasy setting with some trans side characters, and all the couples are M/M, they are adult romance books
Link to the full series here, but I'll be linking the individual books as I talk about them
[there will be adult topics mentioned for the rest of this post, if you would like to skedaddle I won't hold it against you, no graphic details but I will be mentioning some kinks]
The first book is about an assassin sent to kill a slutty prince and it's pretty much whump with some gentle dom/sub sex scenes mixed in. I like angsty shit so this is right up my alley, also appreciated is that neither of the main characters are mean! I hate it when characters are just nasty for no reason, but these guys are both very nice and have a super cute (if morally dubious) romance
The second book is about the first prince's younger brother getting kidnapped while in a foreign country, and ending up on the run with a guy who doesn't know he's a prince, and whom he doesn't know is a wanted fugitive. The most non-kinky one by far, they get into some cute shenanigans while on the run
The third book is about the oldest prince brother being stuck in an arranged marriage where he falls in love with his betrothed's brother, who he happened to sleep with at a brothel the night before getting engaged. This book had an unexpected amount of S&M and vines being used for pleasure 👀 This might actually be the "best" plot of the first four books, in my opinion, and it's pretty angsty. ALSO the main character is 5'2" and that just feels like a win for the short mascs everywhere
The fourth book pretty much starts off a new trilogy, in a different country, but with characters introduced in the first three books. It's about the oldest adopted prince of a murderous dictator, and how he's in love with his magically-bound bodyguard. It's a really interesting dynamic at the beginning because the prince and bodyguard pretty much do platonic dom/sub shit? Not something I see in romance books very often, I thought it was cute. And then their magical bond makes them able to feel each other's pleasure, which is also a very interesting thing I don't see in romance books often.
One thing about all of these books is that the plots generally make sense? it's just that the resolutions to the plots usually don't make sense, which is fine in romance books, but if you go into a series like this expecting real serious high fantasy, u will be disappointed. I, however, am not disappointed, because I love my trashy little romance novels ^-^
all of Tavia Lark's books that I've read so far have been comfortably formulaic, so if you don't want to throw yourself into a 6 book series, her 3 book Radiance series is also fantasy with magic, and it's a similar experience, I love that series as well (Book 1 is about a necromancer, LOVE IT!!!)
I'm about to start the fifth book now, totally blind, so I guess I'll see what it's all about :) maybe I'll come back and update this when I finish the last two books?
