i want to hear your opinions
i want to hear your opinions

it can be either both, sides are welcome
This is Beatles albums and merchandise being burned in 1966 at an organized rally for this purpose because of something controversial John said.
I've seen calls for boycotts from the left and from the right over some damn thing or another.
Sometimes I feel it's justified, sometimes not.
But it's nothing new.
The hypocrisy comes when ONE side implies only the OTHER side does it.

@Cranky Old Witch yuppp so much hypocrisy
If you aren't violating a person's liberty to themselves or their property or between consenting adults then there is nothing you are doing wrong that merits the involvement of force.
Say what you will, accept that others will. Even about what you say.

As for further details on specific subjects I'm not going into the details just to attract argument but if you want the gist,
I support the entire world being a call of duty lobby on Xbox live

lol that would make life a lot more interesting
@beebeebeebee
indeed lol.

First of all, let me clarify that boycotts are not "cancellation", cancel culture involves not only defamation but also ruins someone's life such as receiving death/rape threats constantly, having their personal information leaked, calling their employer to threaten them if they don't fire them, just to name a few examples. While boycotts usually end with not buying/supporting a business or good.
So from there, I think you can all guess I'm against it.
people are always going to have conflicting principals and ideologies. the important thing is that we are able to openly debate these differences rationally. imagine this scenario: martin luther king and nathan bedford forest participating in this thread, giving their views on this subject. now i would be more than happy to hear their opinions equally.
what doesn't help is a collective attempt to memory hole one side of the argument, simply on account of someone disagreeing. yet this happens so often. someone takes umbrage to the opinions someone else has. which leaves them with three options:
- they can block the other person (the path of least resistance)
- continue the debate with a clear, level head
- completely freak out and make it a personal vendetta, rallying others to "cancel" the other person
it's alarming how the last option is seen as the sensible choice for a lot of people.
except cancel culture just doesn't work. the more something is spoken of, the more attention is brought to it and the greater the chance of outside parties becoming privy to it all. overall, it just serves to create a form of streisand effect. it's significantly easier (and takes less mental energy) to just block someone you have an issue with.

It's complete bullshit, basically bullying and dogpiling.
I feel alot of people forget that they are just more than words on a screen and hide behind anonymity of the web.
Tumblr and Twitter(X) encourages this behaviour, but people are exercising their freedom of speech.
Furthermore some people dont seem to care to let go of drama, caring only gets you in the end with cancel culture because you're just words on a screen to some people..
both horrible things. Censorship is a way to stop you from ever expressing yourself.
"Oh but they should censor bad things!"
If we lived in the perfect world, that would be great. But we do not, and the people who censor things will never be satisfied with just "bad things". The moment you accept any kind of censorship, they will start pushing it further and further until everything other than the belief of those in power are censored.
Cancel culture is such a non-issue. There has been countless people avoiding "getting cancelled" because they simply ignore the people trying to "cancel" them. It's just harassment from people with extremely short attention spans looking to hop from one drama to another.
Remember to always fight for a free internet, never celebrate censorship, always fight for individuality.

Most of the time it disgusts me. Yes, sometimes it is about actually facing the consequences of one's actions, but often these people won't even let the person apologise and learn from their mistakes.
It's the one reason why I fear fame.
Besides, we're all people - all of us, at some point, said or did something controversial. Yet cancel culture means they will bring it out and shame you for it publicly. Modern cancel culture literally looks for issues in everything and everyone and is harmful, instead of leading to a peaceful internet, it leads to fear.
As someone who had my words used against me when I simply said some mean things in rage, I experienced cancel culture on my own skin and it was hell. It genuinely left me with mental scars resembling those of narcissistic abuse survivors! And these fears still come back even now, after I apologised and cut all ties to those who shamed me.
And of course, it's different if someone is publicly exposed as a rapist or murderer, then it's someone who said a slur without knowing it's bad and later apologised.
I don't really want to talk about how I got cancelled, but in short, it was a misunderstanding of my intention - due to certain things about myself I didn't realise that what I said might be interpreted differently by others.
In conclusion, sure, call others out, but please listen to their side of the story too, especially if it's something as simple as SAYING something wrong.
for cancel culture.... i dont know, it has its usage? though the weight it carries now feels incredibly immature, more for the reason that yes, a lot of young people want to feel powerful and that they are doing something right, so they'll hop on any chance they can get. but its created more nitpicks than anything, such as if you don't like this thing, youll be insulted into the ground and demonized across the web, on the other hand, people jump on the wagon and may forget about it in a week. people arent as serious about it as they should be, such as knowing what is simply just opinions, what can be room for ACTUAL growth, and what really needs to be "cancelled".
if you become well known, you become a larger target to be the hit of being cancelled because you said something a little wrong when theres absolutely the chance to simply learn from a mistake. on the other hand, groups of people wont stick to cancelling someone if they produce the right music, merch, game, and whatnot as long as it can entertain them. its not being used right.
censorship is a gamble to me too. yes, some things should be censored for the sake of safety, but ALSO the people who are in charge of censoring can of course abuse it easily to drive and promote their biased narrative. it all circles back to being in power and control.

Cancel culture and censorship only seems to worsen things, imo. when, for example, banning a reddit, it causes outrage and backlash from the members, drawing attention to the group that is, probably, “disturbing” to the general public. allowing them space to do whatever, within reason, is the best way to deal with it. there will always be bad people, online, in person, everywhere! they’ll get more sneaky if they’re banned they grow sneaky, possibly drawing kids into it with child like terms to censor their communities topics. with the proper website security, i think that the concept/conversation of internet censorship would end. the people in power simply refuse to do anything meaningful to keep those safe online.

This might be quite flat and straightforward. But cancel culture is disgusting. And so is censorship. Cancel culture is a disease, most of it is lies, and people fake certian things. Once someone does get cancelled, their whole life is ruined. No matter whether it was some minor mistake they made, or if it was completely made up. The abuse to the people who get cancelled is probably worse than what they did around 70% of the time. And people make mistakes, we cant just follow someone's every move and then immediately point when someone makes a wrong decision. We are human beings. And also, sometimes its completely ineffective and doesn't even work.
Censorship is generally negative. People may dislike this but, I feel like everyone should have freedom of opinion. Even if what they believe is a minority view and widely unpopular. People should have the freedom and right to do so, and should not be blocked from sharing it. Those in power may also gain control via censorship. Showing only things that benefit them, and brainwash people into taking their side because they cannot access the opposing view. There's a reason why there's always an opposition in parliament or in a court.
