tips on how to pass for ftm?

Back to General Discussion

im HEAVILY fem and have been experiencing a lot of dysphoria lately.. need tips on how to look more masculine or at least androgynous!!

You could try boxier shirts, straight-leg pants, layers like an open button-up or jacket, chunkier shoes, a shorter or more textured haircut, thicker-looking brows, or simple accessories like a chain or watch. Even changing how you style clothes, like letting shirts fall straight instead of tucking them, can change the overall shape.

Try one thing at a time and pay attention to what makes you feel more comfortable, not what makes you look “convincing” to other people. You do not have to earn your identity by passing. <3 good luck!!

Confidence.

Attitude and confidence are huge and your clothes and hairstyle aid in that, not the other way around.

You may not have the biggest balls in the room, but you always enter like you do.

For good or for ill, young boys lacking confidence are taught this from a young age. And if they struggle with it, are taught to 'fake it until you make it'.

And when you sit, especially on a comfy couch, let's say ... Take up space. Sit like you own it. Legs a bit spread, your arm resting along the back of the couch.

One thing that has helped me is reminding myself that every single man in the entire world struggles with feeling like he's not manly enough. Every. Single. One. Questioning your manliness is incredibly normal for all men and is, by definition, one of the most passing and affirming things in the world.

This isn't a good thing by any means, and it definitely shows that men have really weird expectations shoved onto them and it shouldn't be that way at all. BUT. It has helped me tremendously with fighting dysphoria 👍🏻

Excuse my lack of eloquence, just woke up lol. I'm sure I could have worded this much better.

If you want cosmetic tips, uh. Mascara on the peach fuzz around your lips and jaw. Little flicks, don't cake it on. Makes for nice facial hair if you have a good natural looking color. 👍🏻

size up your men’s/unisex shirts by one size; it gives you a boxier shape by hiding the curve at the waist/hips. haircut is huge… even people who don’t realize you are trans will think you’re at minimum butch if you have certain hairstyles. i suggest men’s cologne too; even cheap ones from 5 below make me feel at ease when i have a masc day.

There's really good picture guides on masculine v. feminine makeup contouring that are big help, and can give you features you can adjust.

Get a good (reasonably priced) matte blending palette of warm browns, and a stick of foundation that matches your face. Darkening your eyebrows, your nose, and your cheekbones are generally the main focus, and the foundation stick will help take the red out of your lips. It will take practice, but you will feel so happy.

The mascara on the face is a good tip, especially if you get a brown one because it looks a little more natural (unless you have black hair of course). You can also give yourself little sideburns if you brush it through the little hairs next to your ears. It also works very well for eyebrows, and can make them look more natural than makeup alone.

When if come to clothes, I love button downs and neckties, they make me feel like I'm finally wearing my own skin. But it does add a lot of layers, so it can be hot if you're wearing a binder.

But, as said above by the incredible @Cranky Old Witch, confidence. You own the world! Or, to paraphrase the late, great Terry Pratchett, "it was as if the world revolved around the socks."*

Just as an example of how much contouring can change things, I look like my own brother:
