I like prog rock, to a point. Maybe more than to a point. I'm kind of 'meh' about most math rock, as a lot of it is musical masturbation.
And microtonal stuff? I've been exposed to those lauded as 'great and innovative' composers since college. Without fail, it usually just sounded bad or out of tune.
But microtonality from other parts of the world, in its cultural context? Love!Β
But a few months ago Angine De Poitrine crossed my path. Of course with their whole aesthetic and all?
I don't know precisely what my thoughts were except to say "Hold up ... I don't hate this!"
I hadn't realized that they were quietly blowing up and drawing record crowds at jazz festivals.
Aw heck, I don't think they're all that 'prog', much more 'mantra-esque' I guess.
But DAMN the groove is RIGHT with these kids and for the first time I LOVE microtonality in a 'western' setting.Β
