how do you keep yourself motivated when writing/posting a fanfic?

Back to Books & Writing

do you usually write every single chapter before starting posting on platforms or do you start posting and just go with the flow?

i've been wanting to post a fanfiction but decided to start by writing all of it first before posting anything. however i think the absence of interactions makes it harder for me to keep up nd since im not stable with writing progressively, i haven't written for quite a while...DUNNO WHAT TO DO!!! it's an idea i cherish but motivation is getting harder to keep Sigh

it depends, what works best for me is talking about it with my friends- brainstorming ideas, gushing about characters and interactions that happen in the story, getting feedback on scenes and plans, or just hopping on call to chat or all write work on our own stories together. but again, this just works for me, it might not for you-

another idea i can offer is going completely offline for an evening (excluding online sites that help you with writing ofc), lighting a candle, brewing some tea, and getting comfortable. do whatever helps you get "in the zone" as they say. or, another thing i like to do: go out, to a café or library, and write there. i've found that i work best when i'm around people (friends or strangers)

@iam_955

i so want to share my work with friends and talk abt it..they just seem to be lacking interest or mayb im just thinking too much..ill def ask them again!!!

i don't think often of setting an atmosphere/place to write a fanfic, ill def do so!! esp when it sounds fun to go to diff places for it

thank you for taking the time to answer🖤 love ur pfp

@fleur

glad to be of help!! good luck with your work - and if it doesn't work out with your friends, maybe try joining writing spaces, like fanfic/writing discord servers for example! i'm in two of those, and they've helped me too,, more so those catering to the fandoms i'm currently in, since that means fellow writers already share my love and passion for the characters of my story - though having at least one server that's just for writing in general instead of fandom is also really good, since those focus more on improving your writing in general.

I don’t really write fanfics, but I do write a lot, short stories, poems, essays, music seems to help me a lot when writing, sometimes I take inspiration from it or even just looking at art helps, I would also say you should take breaks so you don’t burn yourself out, I find that reading really helps your vocabulary and focus, I usually write when I’m alone and I need my surroundings to be not so distracting, I usually write in the dark with a small light source whether that’s a candle, a lamp, or even a phone light, of course it’s different for everyone, these are just some things that help me, and from what I’ve seen it’s pretty similar for most but some things will differ, I hope you find this helpful !!

@ASH3RXDD

super helpful!! ill try and settle the mood with songs, the light and all because i tend to just go for it when this can def be very motivating!! i went back to reading and it has helped me to keep my motivation up so i need to continue :pp thanks a lot for taking the time to answer and keep being creative it's lovely to see!

i write mainly poems [trying to start writing fiction!] but, for me, daydreaming about the characters + listening to some REALLY specific songs that somehow fits their situation helps a lot LOL. also having people share their thoughts about my works really motivates me!

also, if you don't mind obviously, would you be open to share more about your fanfic? you seem really passionate about it!

@ian.ian you're 100% right about setting the vibes/listening to music, i need to be more specific regarding this hehe,, and you're so sweet hello??!! :blush: i dont rlly have anyone to share abt it and it's kind of on hold for now i guess?..it's a jjk ff one so it might not be fitting to anyone's taste.. and plz:!!! feel free to share abt ur own ideas, writing poems is such a lovely hobby so if you want to start fiction then you'll do just fine :pp

@fleur ooohh that sounds really interesting!! i mean,, the fact that's a jjk ff, not that it is on hold LOL. what is the main premise? is it focused more on a specific ship? please share the details twin!!

and thanks! i'm really inspired by a VN i played lately so something probably will come from it tehee

@ian.ian HAHA YUP DONT WORRY!! it's a satosugu one bcuz im sick of them..the vibes are like doomed teenagers, i guess i got inspired by a lot of high school media of this genre (always more angst)..IF ISTARTED TO SHARE ID SPAM

ohgosh HELL YEAH do u mind sharing which VN? with what u like nd tastes, u seem like the person to have the perfect inspo for it all :ppp

@fleur ohhhh I SEE I SEE!! well i kinda got a ton of questions now but i don't wanna question-bomb you yet HAHAHA so, for now, how many chapters did you write?? do you, like, plan your chapters based on something specific?? GAHHH if i continue i'll probably ask you like, a thousand questions LOL mbmb

you even saw my tastes to say this??? that's so cute omg TwT. the VN is Z.A.T.O. // I Love the World and Everything In It! i highly recommend it, the story's beautiful and, for a visual novel, it's extremely short. not only that but their creator is Ferry, an incredibly, amazingly, interestingly artist that creates really good Vocaloids!! not to mention she drew EVERYTHING in Z.A.T.O. yeah yeah. she's really cool!

oh and PLEASE yap more about your fanfic! i'm really interested in reading it!

@ian.ian OH PLEASE YOURE SO NICE i feel like, excited to share about it all it makes me happy to know you really are eager to learn more abt it:blush: so far i got 7 i think, i mostly go with the vibes to be honest but since it's a draft it's easier to go back at each chap if it doesn't match my final idea! i find it hard to organise thoughts even if i try rlly hard to make lists and stuff u know..DONT EVEN APOLOGISE genuinely u got me jumping around

YUP i had to!!!! checking ur profile told me everything i need to know about what u consume and it's absolutely perfect trust me, just go for it!!!!

AND HOLD ON i didnt think anyone would mention Z.A.T.O. plz it's in my list of VNs??!!??? now i know that i REALLY need to play it oh gosh,, i totally can see the vibes + i have some other VNs in mind that you'd def love then :pp i rlly admire ferry's work but you motivated me to check it further hehe. if thats the universe you want to write about then i can totally see it i love this kind of atmosphere; any other ideas you have regarding it that u want to share or am i being too curious? :cute:

i feel like i might end up writing an essay on here with everything i can nd have to say..

@fleur GAAAHHHH YOU'RE SO SWEET!!! and WHOA 7 whole chapters??? how many words did you write in total?? it's really interesting to see how passionate you are towards it! do you have, like, a favorite chapter or something? like... "wow i really nailed on this one didn't i?" yk?

actually, i'm asking you a lot but i forgot the PRINCIPAL thing. PLEASE SHARE YOUR DRAFTS TWIN!!! and please don't come with the "but my writings bad" trope because you obviously have a way with words. ok. and I GET YOU brainstorming is just so difficult right??? i mean my brain stops working the moment i'm aware of my thoughts LOL just go with the flow i guess xD

"it's absolutely perfect trust me, just go for it!!!!" thank you so much???? also, i've stalked your profile too and honestly you're such an interesting person!! i mean, not only the interests but ALSO the fact you're a history major which is a huge flex. like, insane flex twin. kudos to you!

YOU KNOW Z.A.T.O.???????? AND YOU ALSO KNOW FERRY?????? GAAAHHHHH you're so cool. like, really really interestingly cool. thank you. and PLEASE play it!! it's such a good story, like, really interesting and well-driven!! i must refrain myself from talking more about it or else i'm going to spoil the whole thing hehe AND PLEASE RECOMMEND MORE VNs PLEASE OMG??? YOU'RE SO COOL???

and don't worry! actually i'm extra happy you got curious about it teehee. i'm taking a lot of inspiration from Z.A.T.O. characters and their dynamics actually; i want it to be realistic and fun -- i mean, the first half will be fun, the other will be, hopefully, pure tragedy xD. tho i'm still figuring out if i'll add romance or just let the characters be only friends. explaining in Z.A.T.O.'s terms, it would be like if Ira and Marina were a thing, but Ira's more soft at heart.

and PLEASE WRITE A LOT TWIN!! at this point you probably figured out i'll read the whole thing LOL

What works for me is writing every chapters, but only publishing them once I finished proofreading/rewriting them individually (which can take either an hour or a week). Otherwise I don’t have enough interest in the fandom by the time I write chapter 2, and so it ends up never being finished

Now you're the only one here who can tell me if it's true
That you love me
And I love me :3c

@angelichael LMAOOO thats exactly my issue, posting in the middle of a phase of interest for a precise media makes me give it up at some point..way too quick..

@fleur I have about 3 unfinished fanfics with only one chapter. And one finished fic with 5 chapters (that’s where I found how to complete them). And that’s why I stick to oneshots! :3c

Now you're the only one here who can tell me if it's true

@angelichael oooooo U might be right about oneshots..good to know u find ur solution:star: (shout-outs to the 3 unfinished fanfics LOLOL)

I write everything chapter by chapter if I have a vague idea of what the story is going to be. Otherwise, I’d just write it all at once. But doing it one chapter at a time really helps me since I can find the motivation to write the next one within a weeks time and let myself write it over the next few days as to not burn myself out
