I hate the societal expectation to always be available

Back to Rants & Vents

I think this is one of the major bizarre things mobile phones activated in people, because you always have a phone that means you have to ALWAYS be available in a lot of peoples' eyes. I have to respond to every text, every call, everything, or else I'm 'ignoring them' or 'avoiding them'

fucking hell I'm just not glued to my phone, I'm tired and don't wanna talk, I plan on responding later, it's not fucking personal. But it feels like it has become personal to a lot of people if you don't respond to shit immediately. I thought the whole point of texting was because you could respond later?????

This is one of the many reasons I want to start using a dumb phone jesus fucking christ

I feel this in my soul, YES

This is why I'm pretty much permanently invisible on Discord. I don't want anyone feeling like I'm ignoring them if they see me online and not responding, and I don't want the pressure of having to respond immediately. Often times I'm at work and have time to read a message, but not to stop and write a response. I think the people closest to me are used to it by now.

@(m)tropy me personally, I have one of these bad boys somewhere (it was my grandma's)

@Sol my aunt had this as decoration omg

"what are you thinking about?" "uh.. uh.."

Yeah, I personally just assume someone's busy when they're not responding, like it's not urgent, sometimes I just like to check in and see how they're doin' or stuff like that. Well unless it goes on for like way longer than a month or something like that 😅 But eh, I know I'm not entitled to anyone's time.

real!! i had to force myself to stop being so chronically online because it was getting to the point i would get irritated by friend activity and the miscommunication that comes with it. dropped symbiotic relationships where it kinda felt like "since you didn't reply to me, you must hate me — but I'm also not going to ask" bc i'm getting too old to deal with that stuff. now that i spend more time offline, i realize how fucking crazy that was???

"what are you thinking about?" "uh.. uh.."

I have a flip phone and told ppl if you wanna get ahold of me text or call me. I'm not permanently available for ppl and everyone understood that, thankfully. I'm also at an age where if someone tries some insecure teenage bs I just block them cuz I don't have time for that I'm almost 30

Everyone of my friends knows this about me and if I make new friends I set a hard boundary. My cell is almost ALWAYS on do not disturb, the only people who can get through while that is on is my work place, spouse, my mother and his. Of course I still reply to my friends and what not, but I do it on my own accord and without the constant flood of notifications. It's been this way since Covid and I will never look back.

omgyes and i feel so bad whenever i text somehow “dry” when someone texts me dryer… bro
