does anyone know anything about D&D

i joined the d&d club at my school...i have NO d&d knowledge..my friend is the dungeon master and they said it's fine if i join with no knowledge but like...idk..PLEASE TELL ME STUFF..

I've been playing for more than 40 years, currently DM two groups and play in a third.

There are so many different ways to play, that there's no particular thing I could say that might be useful except this:

HAVE FUN!

A few things:

Old and experienced players LOVE new players. No one will be expecting you to know a bunch of rules and so they are usually very kind and patient with newbies.

Let yourself go. Get immersed in the roleplaying during your gaming session. Remember that you are not the star, but you and the rest of the group are collectively the stars, and are collectively telling a story that might have a 'plot' or might just 'meander' in an intentionally directionless sort of way.

I highly recommend watching some of Tater The Bard's videos! He's incredibly funny and does things like telling stories about his campaigns, viewer's campaigns, etc. 

He has nice long videos talking about different classes in D&D and what they do. He loves to do silly videos like "How evil are D&D classes based on the amount of war crimes they regularly commit with their spells?". It's a fantastic way to get introduced to the things that are in standard editions of D&D :)

The section of "D&D Horror Stories" is a perfect example of things not to do that tend to break standard table etiquette (Most DMs are super lax; The examples tend to be things like godmodding, baby raging, etc.) It also helps you figure out what to look out for in a DM, because nobody is perfect and sometimes peoples DM styles won't mesh with your gameplay!

Most of all: Have fun. Get creative. Talk to your DM if you have any questions or concerns. Every time I've ever played and gotten confused, I just take a moment to text my DM even if they're in the same room/call as me, and privately ask so that the game doesn't get stopped, and it's helped so much over the years.
