big luther kent had literally one of the mightiest voices i ever heard in any genre ever. i am kind of embarrassed about how i discovered him

@Cranky Old Witch luther kent was, among other things, the voice of max camel in the musical album produced for camel cigarettes in the 90s. i hunted forever to figure out whose voice that was because it felt disrespectful to only have heard his advertisement work! turns out he was one of the singers for blood sweat and tears and just was unable to do a recording session because he was under contract with a different record company at the time.
that whole album is fascinating... produced by the same producer as lady marmalade and written by two of the members of the rivieras. was recorded in new orleans over the course of a few months in one crazy fever dream of a project. i cannot figure out for the life of me who the target audience was. the article i read about it indicated that there was simply just one guy on the camel team that REALLY wanted to make music for the characters in the ads. the company approved it for some godforsaken reason. fascinating stuff and an oddball part of both advertising and blues history.
