gay movie/show recs..?

Back to Movies & TV

title describes itself (although I'm really just asking for a good representation, I don't care if the media you rec isn't actually about gay themes), i already have some movies that have been in my list for a long time

here's the problem, my list it's too japanese. i need movies from other countries

call me by your name, best movie

Well, if you want a gay show ...

"Our Flag Means Death"

On the upside: Funny, and surprisingly historically accurate, though that's not the intent.

On the downside: Cancelled after two seasons. Too gay, so it got cancelled.

I couldn't tell you why this is the first thing that came to my head, but there's this 1999 Canadian movie called Top of the Food Chain which is this dry surreal parody of sci-fi B-movies; bisexual protagonist who ends up in a poly relationship at some point, with one of his partners being male and they have a pretty high amount of romantic scenes iirc

You can watch it on YouTube

Speaking of older gay Canadian content, I really wish I could be the one to recommend you a specific Bruce LaBruce movie. The thing is that I haven't gone deep enough in his filmography to lob you something from him, though feel more than welcome to check out his material for yourself. I heard it's some real good shit

Edit: Almost forgot about Strangers with Candy if you don't mind TV shows (though there's a prequel movie too)

There's always debate about which parts aged worse than others but I think the main couple of the show is pretty sensitively portrayed for a 1999 dark-ish comedy

The Wet Hot American Summer movie + TV shows + comic + radio drama (?!) also have a canonically gay couple that's depicted quite nicely

Remember,

Midnight Cowboy is an absolute classic! There's a super famous line in it that almost everyone has referenced without knowing the source ;)

❝ Smartasses get killed. We always see to that. ❞ — The Legion

spider lilies 2007

movies: portrait of a lady on fire (wlw - i believe this is all in french from what i remember, but it's. sO good.), the kids are all right (wlw), my policeman (mlm), kill your darlings (mlm), fear street trilogy (wlw)
shows: the haunting of bly manor (wlw)&hill house (wlw as well, but it's not a main theme, just a character who is gay and has an angsty relationship while experiencing The Horrors), interview with a vampire/the vampire lestat (mlm), arcane (just, very gay lol), sex education (everything everywhere all at once), the sandman (a lot of queer elements)

also i will add that i see everything i watch as gay:alienfinger:

But I'm A Cheerleader, Bound, Moonlight, Priscilla: Queen of The Desert, To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar, Carol. I know you didn't ask for documentaries but The Queen (1968) and Paris Is Burning (1990) are ones I highly highly recommend, especially if you're interested in drag and ballroom
