I’m looking for a movie that hits really hard emotionally and leaves you thinking about it for days after watching it.

I want something deeply emotional, meaningful, and thought-provoking — a movie about life, love, relationships, loss, loneliness, or just the complicated side of being human.

Not necessarily a movie that’s simply sad. I want something that makes you feel emotionally connected to the characters and leaves you sitting there in silence after the credits.

Basically, I want a movie that stays with me long after I’ve finished watching it.

Hamnet (2025) is a very emotional look into the lives of two people as they struggle to recover from a family tragedy. It's also based off of Shakespeare's life. The Girl Who Cried Pearls (2025) is a short film but it's very cute and kind of sad in an uncomfortable kind of way. For an animated feature length I recommend Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises (2013).

From a personal standpoint, I've never been able to stop thinking about Buffalo 66. You do need a little background knowledge on Vincent Gallo to have it really hit though. Let me know if any of these appeal to you or if I'm off the mark!

into the wild (2007). trust me it's devastating

"how long, how long must we sing this song?"

This one's a classic, but Dead Poets Society. I cry for the last 30 minutes and I think about it for weeks after each watch.

I loved "everything everywhere all at once" and "a short film about killing"

Everything that you listed wanting in a movie, you can find in Synecdoche New York by Charlie Kaufman. It explores the themes you listed wanting to see, while also making a huge statement on our existence and the meaning of life in a raw and unconventional way.

Your name engraved herein, it's about a gay couple in Taiwain... in the 87.

Pretty sad story, but it has a good ending...!!!

everything that you asked for is in It’s Such a Beautiful Day (2012) by don hertzfeldt. it’s a traditionally animated movie about a man with an unnamed illness, and how it impacts his relationships, his daily life, and his understanding of the world. my favorite movie of all time, it’s absolutely devastating. i cry every time i watch it. it is only 52 minutes long.

it also has innovative multimedia animation techniques, if you’re interested. don hertzfeldt’s animations are commonly shown in animation schools for their immensely ambitious execution. one interesting thing about this movie is that the very old camera he was using deteriorated over the course of production.

qualquer maneira de amor vale amar

Portrait of a Lady On Fire. It captures the beauties of the female existence and what sapphic romance is better than almost any film I can think but also in the same breath, the tragedy and sadness that can stem form that.

I think I cried on the phone with my partner for like 2 hours after I saw it.

it's a schmaltzy thriller, but the talented mr. ripley (1999) had this effect on me!

Only thing I can think of rn is “the lovers” by studio heartbreak. It’s pretty good ngl

The Grave of the Fireflies by Studio Ghibli. It's an overall heavy and sad movie, but it gave me a lot to reflect on. Definitely a lot to cry about.

Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009) will break your heart. It's based from the true story where a real dog named Hachiko living in Japan who waited almost a decade for his deceased owner to return.

Life is a mystery. Explore it while you can.

I personally really enjoyed The Sunset Limited (2011). It's a film based on the screenplay of the same name about an ex-convict priest who saves a college professor from his suicide attempt, and the conversation that follows. Stunning performances from both Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, I think it is just my favorite film Jackson is in ever? It stuck with me for days after. It's a bleak and beautiful movie and I highly recommend it.
