CD Recommendations?

Back to Music

Hey everyone! I was thinking of once I got my License, since the car I'll be using will have a CD player I was going to start collecting. Who better to ask then the lovely people of FR? :)

I'm personally more into the late 90s-2010s punk, metal, pop-punk and pop. However I do have a strong interest in 80s to current or trad and industrial goth Such as Bauhaus and The Cure. With capitalism rapidly coming for our asses I'd prefer to thrift for the CDs however, I am willing to learn how to burn CDs once I'm able and any recommendations either way is super appreciated.

The bands I already have planned to look for would be:

SOAD, Greenday, MCR, Blink-182, Avenged Sevenfold, Paramore, Nickleback, Simple Plan, The Killers, Evanescence, Three doors down.

I pretty much know what I'd want in my CD binder I just would love some recommendations, and to hear your favorites to look out for in the stores, see if I forgot some good bands or maybe even try out some new genres. Thank you so much in advance <3 :)

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness; oh evil spirit born of those drifting between Heaven and Earth; may the thunderous power from the garments of these holy delicate maidens strike down upon you with great vengeance and furious anger! Shattering your loathsome impurity and returning you from whence you came! Repent motherfucker!

omg there's an infinite amount to choose from.. you gotta get some No Doubt in there! Rage Against the Machine, Deftones, Pixies, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, AFI, Three Days Grace, TOOL, Breaking Benjamin?! just to rattle off a few classics kinda similar to what you already have!

on top of thrift stores, always check flea markets or antiques AND especially yard sales for cds! people at yard sales will usually beg you to take their junk, lol. and definitely learn to burn cds! it's an important skill everyone should have, heheh :D

@Linkie

THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT I loved Three Days Grace  and used to like playing No Doubt songs on rock band as a kid 😭 and I TOTALLY forgot about them! Thank you so much, I've heard the band Deftones but never actually attempted to listen so i'll definitely hear them out! Oh for sure! Since summer is coming around yard sales will hopefully be galore since everyone is slightly in need of cash. Thank you so much for your recs! if you ever think of some others feel free to let me know!!!

I highly suggest AFI's first album, Answer That And Stay Fashionable. It leans more on hardcore than their newer stuff. Bad Brains are punk godfathers and influenced a ton of 90's and 2000's punk bands.

See if there are any record stores in your area. I have a few near me and they also sell used CDs that run pretty cheap unless it happens to be rare.

Some classic must haves are

Nirvana- Incesticide (just perfectly weird)

Alice in Chains - Dirt (a masterpiece)

Green Day -  1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (my favorite Green Day album)

Rammstein - Sehnsucht (dark, heavy, amazing)

@Tim Althouse

Never heard of AFI or Bad Brains but I'll for sure check them out! I'm around a ferry ride (and prob a few rolling city hills T.T) away from an actual record store but that will not stop my determination to look around when I go over (thankfully my family is going to the city on sunday so maybe I'll steer them a good walk to the record shop lmao)

Rammstein, while I've only mainly heard Du hast I thank you for making me to remember him, may your both sides of your pillow be cold during this summer. I'll definitely look for it and catch up on Rammstein lol. I'll for sure keep all your recs in mind thank you so much!!

Yessss! I'm a huge physical media collector and CDs are my favs so I'd be glad to chat with you about them if you want! You can definitely add and message me any time! As far as recommendations go I'd definitely at the very least recommend Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" and "Under My Skin" which since you're into 2000s/2010s pop punk would definitely be right up your alley and I think the cover art for both look so cool on a CD case, plus  the art on the CDs themselves are also super cool. I also recommend "Jagged Little Pill" by Alanis Morissette, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" by The Smashing Pumkins, and really any Pierce the Veil album cause you really can't go wrong there IMO. I do hope we can chat about CDs and music though, definitely one of my favorite things to talk about!

Great choices so far! Building a CD collection is such a fun hobby, especially when you can actually listen to them in the car. There’s something really satisfying about owning a physical copy and looking through the booklet while the music plays.

Since you’re into late 90s/2000s punk, metal, pop-punk, and goth, I’d definitely keep an eye out for some of these:

Pop-punk / punk:

  • Alkaline Trio — From Here to Infirmary or Good Mourning
  • The Offspring — Americana or Smash
  • Sum 41 — Does This Look Infected? or Chuck
  • Yellowcard — Ocean Avenue
  • Fall Out Boy — From Under the Cork Tree
  • Taking Back Sunday — Tell All Your Friends
  • Jimmy Eat World — Bleed American

Metal / alternative:

  • Deftones — White Pony
  • System of a Down — Toxicity (definitely grab this one if you find it)
  • Killswitch Engage — The End of Heartache
  • Bullet For My Valentine — The Poison
  • Slipknot — Iowa or Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Goth / dark alternative:

  • The Sisters of Mercy — Floodland
  • Siouxsie and the Banshees — Juju
  • The Mission — God’s Own Medicine
  • Type O Negative — October Rust (a great bridge between goth and metal)

Also, don’t overlook random CDs you find while thrifting. Some of the best discoveries come from picking up something you’ve never heard of just because the cover looks interesting. Early 2000s compilations are also a goldmine, things like Warped Tour compilations can introduce you to dozens of bands from that era.

Good luck with the collection! A first car with a CD player and a binder full of albums is honestly a pretty perfect combination ʕ•́ᴥ•̀ʔっ

@discmaan_

ahhh such a good list! thank you so much! I was talking to my step dad today and he was talking about all the cds he'd had in the 90s. He totally understands why some people are going back to physical media. I'm really excited to start my collection I think in one of my totes I have an old Justin Bieber "My World" CD and an old some "punk/rock goes" CD. Thank you so much for the advice I'll surely keep it in mind!
