What made you become alternative?

Back to General Discussion

Me first, I became alternative in 2023 because i resonated with emo subculture. I was strongly against my “basic” look because it didn’t feel like me. I also grew up with Rock/Emo music since the 2015 youtube era. and I, a POC, didn’t see much curly emo hair and i wanted to be the Emo Queen of MySpace as a child (i still wanna be the Emo queen😭). Since 2016, I always been left minded because i believe in stopping genocide, supporting LGBTQ+, and defending our rights.

We are the things that others fear.

I started off in 7th grade as just a general "alternative" style I guess, I had no idea what I was doing and still thought emo meant those boys with fluffy hair covering their eyes and oversized sweaters🥹

But eventually I got REALLY into the ACTUAL emo stuff, mostly because of a book series where both me and the entire miniscule fandom imagined the main character as emo

I think I first started being alternative full-time in middle school, I'd guess around 7th grade. I have always had a kind of "alternative instinct", I don't really know how to explain it. It just feels...right.

In elementary school & early middle school I had a super dgaf attitude about my hygiene and hair and stuff like that. I just wasn't super motivated to do basic stuff like that. Becoming alternative and pursuing a certain "look" really helped with that. When I got my first official "scene" haircut a year or two ago, I suddenly began to care about how I looked and became proud to look in the mirror.

I have not looked back since I went emo/scene. There's so many things that click for me.

(And I've had leftist politics since literally forever. Like elementary school I was already very pro LGBTQ+, anti-Trump, and "woke" in a lot of people's definitions of it.)
