fav "niche" linux distro?

Back to Web & Tech

i recently started distro hopping and im currently using a distro i really like a lot so far! (peppermintOS <33) and i was wondering if anyone else used any "nicher" distros. and by niche i mean anything that isnt just, super popular (ie. ubuntu, arch, mint, redhat, manjuro, etc etc)

maybe say what drew you toward the distro and how you're liking it so far! :D

personally i found peppermintOS by chance, i was just looking for something different after my attempts at installing endeavorOS failed right at the installation. i was looking through a list of linux distros on wikipedia and peppermint caught my eye! the installation was way smoother and actually worked lolll

i originally posted this on "general discussion", but i thought itd be more on topic (hehe) for it to be here. sorry if its a repeat post!

Kinda old but, "damn small Linux" is a distro that is super small and can run right from a USB stick.

I was using elementaryOS for a bit because I'm use to Mac OS, but there isn't much benefit to it over Mint. I'd like to try popOS as well :)

@Apav ooo elementaryOS and popOS! i was considering popOS, tho idont remember why i ultimately decided against it,, im not 100% if elementary's new to me, so imma drop it in my list :3

I'm just using Gentoo these days. I like that they give you options on basic system things like your init system. Also you compile everything yourself so can remove features you don't need in software. It can be a pain configuring things at times though.

@KratosPS having the freedom to do that is pretty nice, but its also a pain in the ass,,  peppermint's a bit similar in that regard lol

@drifter Oh it can be a pain. I wasn't happy that they weren't on the latest kernel for example on their pre compiled branch. So now I'm stuck editing my kernel and compiling it when there is an update. Though it lets me remove quite a lot of things I don't need. Like I don't have intel in my system, so I don't need intel drivers. Can also cut down on security issues. Honestly linux distros come down to what you value and want out of your system. You can customize any distro to behave like another if you try hard enough. Your only real difference is the package manager and what software is in their repositories.

probably old versions of Enlightenment purely for the cracked out isnane themes that are really awesome

noDisco here. 5 times the value but 3 times the production time! the joys of indie music.

not sure when it comes to niche distros. I like Q4OS, specifically with Trinity - not a fan of the way it looks by default but I like the way Trinity Desktop/KDE3 behaves, especially with Konqueror acting as the browser filesystem and control panel (that last one has been replaced with a proper settings app but you can still get it by going to settings:/). reminds me a lot of older Windows versions and how explorer.exe, Internet Explorer, and control panel were all based on eachother. we stopped doing it for very good reason, but something about that behavior intrigues me regardless. ik that's a stupid idea to like a DE but idrc.

ultimately I'm still on team Fedora KDE.

she/they - Welsh - keitai/garaho user - Fedora KDE + WinXP + WinVista - will hyperfixate!

People would call for my ban if I posted it lol

I main Fedora but for a while I really enjoyed Void Linux, but some choices by the team and also some difficulty with getting steam to work led me away, for some it might be a great distro

did someone say trinity..? proud user of that since it became a project. it's not a distro in itself, but rather throwback to the mid 2000's atop whatever you want, debian in my case. not well known, but actively maintained as ever. i wouldn't hesitate to try/run a cd that uses it as a default d/e.
my fave niche distros are defunct that i'm aware of. vector linux was slackware made easy, slapt-get your way right through everything. pc-bsd was freebsd made easy. not apt-easy, but you didn't have to go through all the portsnapping to do things.
