Back to General Discussion

๐Ÿ’— hi, let me share w/ you my notes for less screen time :

Build my โ€œanalog environmentโ€

Small changes matter more than huge detoxes.

Music

  • ๐Ÿ’— MP3 player or iPod-style device
  • ๐Ÿ’— CD player
  • ๐Ÿ’— Vinyl if you enjoy collecting

Why????
-> No notifications, no endless recommendations, no doomscrolling.

Writing&thinking

  • ๐Ÿ’— Pocket notebook (my fav)
  • ๐Ÿ’— Fountain pen or pencil
  • ๐Ÿ’— Physical calendar or planner
  • ๐Ÿ’— Sticky notes on walls

-> Writing by hand slows your thoughts in a good way.

Reading

  • ๐Ÿ’— Physical books
  • ๐Ÿ’— Magazines
  • ๐Ÿ’— Comics / mangaโ€™s
  • ๐Ÿ’— Library card
  • ๐Ÿ’— (Kindle if you prefer !) always better than reading on a phone.

Reading on paper/kindle helps attention span recover.

Photography

  • ๐Ÿ’— Disposable camera
  • ๐Ÿ’— Digital compact camera
  • ๐Ÿ’— Film camera

You stop taking 500 photos and start noticing moments !!

Time&focus

  • ๐Ÿ’— Alarm clock (instead of phone)
  • ๐Ÿ’— Wristwatch
  • ๐Ÿ’— Kitchen timer / Pomodoro timerย

This reduces automatic phone checking.

-ย For my part, it works really well, and my screen time has dropped by perhaps 70%. (from 9hours pls ???? to 2-3hours)

thank u soo much im always so bored and just go on my phone, im like glued to it, this will so help me get lesser screen time xx

@Americassweetheartย I hope it works out for you!! by the way, Iโ€™ve posted two other things here that Iโ€™d forgotten to include!

But I really hope it does; itโ€™s true that with our phones these days, itโ€™s hard to get bored,

but once you get into the habit, I swear youโ€™ll notice a huge difference and feel better. ๐Ÿ’•

PS : How could I have forgotten that!!

Activities

  • ๐Ÿ’— Arrowwords
  • ๐Ÿ’— Crossword puzzles
  • ๐Ÿ’— Sports (any kind)
  • ๐Ÿ’— Walking
  • ๐Ÿ’— Coloring
  • ๐Ÿ’— Painting
  • ๐Ÿ’— Puzzles
  • ๐Ÿ’— Going out with friends or alone (alone its ok and sometimes BETTER :) )

Also, set screen time limits on your appsโ€”stay mentally strong and don't click "Ignore"โ€”but I promise you, it's worth it.

I recently received a hand-me-down Kindle, and before Amazon stopped supporting it, I found that I was reading more and on my phone less. It was great!

(This is such a great list, with excellent suggestions! Do you think I might share it over on the Tech forum? With all due acknowledgements, of course. I started a thread about making a low-tech lifestyle, and I think your information would be a big help to anyone that comes looking. The more places it is, the more people might find that spark.ย  =D )

@Erah Mar enjoy it happy to read that !!

The Kindle is honestly one of the things I get the most value out of; itโ€™s so much nicer to do something like reading without being interrupted by notifications or tempted to start scrolling.

Yeah, of course !!no problem at all. If it helps people, thatโ€™s always a good thing.๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@L0ostSoulx thank you!

And yeah, I think I'm definitely going to get another eReader. It's worth the money to me.

Thanks sooo much for this helpful post! ย I have been waiting for months to find a wristwatch I like because I hate having to whip out my phone to check the time, and usually I open my phone and then immediately forget what time it is anyway lolllย

@salixย I hope this helps you and especially that you find your wristwatch haha!!โค

@salix I love having a wristwatch, it makes it so much easier to avoid my phone. Nowย  if I could just find an analog with a date display (that doesn't cost the earth) I would be set.

As someone who has a mp3 player, YALL NEED TO INVESTTTT!! The one I have has the time on the top, ebooks, audiobooks, music, and you can put movies and shows (and YouTube vids) on there!! Itโ€™s amazingย

@๐’ฆ๐’พ๐“‰๐“‰๐“Ž๐ŸŽ€โ€งโ‚Šหšโ€เผ‰โ€งโ‚Šหš tysm !!! which one do you have ??,

@L0ostSoulx I have the innioasis y1!! Itโ€™s really good besides the fact that the sd card sucks and you have to replace it ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Generally try to own more stuff, if the answer is yes to โ€œwill my life be majorly affected by a battery dying?โ€ Then yes, you need to do more, donโ€™t rely on your phone for everythingย

I say you should try free solutions first instead of buying things as your knee-jerk reaction. Theres good screentime managing apps out there, not just the one built into your phone. I hear screenzen is pretty good. Itll prevent you from opening certain apps more than a few times a day, so i would do that for all social media, or delete the apps so you can only access them through browser. Download an mp3 player on your phone. Turn off all your notifications except texts and calls. Theres nothing wrong with the clock app, the notes app, or the kindle app, the goal is not to get distracted. Buying the dumber devices wont fix it automatically, you have to work on yourself. The phone itself isnt the enemy. I dont mean to be rude or anything, just offering my own opinion.

Mansplain over, Alexander signing OUT!!

omg yess i luv this

i realyl hav been wanting 2 get an mp3 player
