I haven't played any in forever but I remember loving Tomato Clinic, Your Dry Delight, and especially loved Error143. I also think Stillwater was fun! Hopefully something here is your vibe :]

I'm currently playing an older visual novel called planetarian~ reverie of a little planet. i used to watch the anime adaptation as a kid on tubi (which is also rlly good) im playing the original which you can find dumps of online!

i know this one isnt EVERYONES cup of tea, but i highly rec saya no uta/the song of saya!! its the most beautiful vn ive ever played, personally, and i rec it SO heavily to anyone who’s interested!! the art is beautiful, and so is the story, the writing, the SOUNDTRACK!!!!, and the ending(s). def check it out if you mess with it!!! :33

you sooo get it! saya was honestly a beautiful horror story, coming from someone who’s gotten all the endings! it’s also really short for a visual novel!

these are the ones ive played and recommended, however theres some like: "Velvet Bite: Softly, With Teeth", "Flesh, Blood, & Concrete", and "Married in Red" that i havent played yet, but i think they look neat!

Can't go wrong with Clannad. Smaller indie and more obscure ones I love are Our Life beginning and always, and Royal Alchemist. Havent played Royal Alchemist's sequel but its in my library. If you know Long Live The Queen its sorta like that but not nearlyyyyy as bullshitty.
Back to bigger ones, The Great Ace Attorney is AMAZING. Some cases drag a lil but its so good. Downside of not playing the first AA games is that it'll set your expectations too high lol but you don't need any outside info to get what's happening.
I've been hearing about Clannad for a while but for some reason I thought it was an anime. I'll check it out! I've played a few of the Ace Attorney games but none of the prequel guys. Thank you for the recommendations! :D

If you like Denpa horror and can stomach heavy subjects then Subahibi and Totono are absolutely fantastic VNs. Totono is more on the shorter side at 10 hours and Subahibi is around 50 hours if you care about VN lengths. Genuinely the most amazing pieces of literature I read.
Also someone else already suggested it but Clannad is amazing too! You said you thought it was an anime and that would be because they made an anime adaptation of the VN! Tears guaranteed for all three of these
not sure if this would be your cup of tea but South Scrimshaw is really good! its a speculative marine biology documentary/visual novel about ocean life in an alien world :)
the artwork and backgrounds are so beautiful too, its mixed-media digital art + watercolor illustrations!
