Games

13 Games to Get To Know Me

Grand Theft Auto III (PS2) - my first sandbox game and, by extension, chaos simulator. The soundtrack was bangin’ too, which was pure bonus.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (PC) - my first class-less RPG and and introduction to steampunk (a term I wouldn’t learn for a few more years). Plus: guns and magic in the same world!

Super Mario Bros. (NES) - You gotta start somewhere. I played it at the pool hall in an arcade cabinet before I ever got my Nintendo one glorious Christmas morning. I’ve never beat the game, so who knows if you really can see the princess naked.

Chrono Trigger (SNES) - One of my first RPGs and proof that I chose poorly getting the Sega Genesis instead of the Super Nintendo. Multiple endings? I guess I need to play this game so many times throughout my life.

EarthBound (SNES) - RPGs don’t need to be faux-historic? And since when could video games take place in “the real world”? Also, one morning I played so intently that I didn’t know I was sick. It wasn’t until I paused to use the bathroom that I realized I needed to vomit immediately.

The Sims 3 (PC) - Not sure how this grabbed my attention, but it did. I was at a friend’s place waiting for others to show up so we could play Magic and he was playing it while we chatted. He let me create a new Sim and give it a try. I liked it enough to buy a copy, realized my Dell from 2004 couldn’t run it, and ended up buying a laptop (I was probably due anyway) so I could play it. I only bought a couple of expansions for some new careers and generally preferred the base town and Sims.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade) - While there have been better beat-em ups, I was newly a fan of the show and discovered this beauty at Aladdin’s Castle and sunk many tokens into it over the years. Of course, this gem lead to me getting the dogshit NES side-scroller game for my birthday.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch) - The physics involved with building contraptions and making them work is just so much fun. The combat is nice, though I still find the weapon durability to be a negative. The story is decent, but it can be wear a little on me as I hear about the great combat between the good guys and bad guys that happened aeons ago for 3rd+ time (because the big challenges at the beginning can be done in any order). It basically improved on LoZ: Breath of the Wild in most ways and that game was already a blast.

NBA Jam Tournament Edition (Genesis): I’m not a sports fan, but put some combat and power-ups in a game that responds well and I might enjoy it.

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS): Sure, Vandal Hearts was the tactical RPG that first got me into the genre, but it was too constrained. FFT had all the grid-goodness, plus a whole bunch of classes to customize my team. And once I realized I could grind levels, it was over for those bitches. I’m not sure if I ever actually beat the game, but I’ve definitely put hundreds of hours into it teaching everyone to learn how to teleport around the map and steal gear.

Mortal Kombat II (Arcade): The game that made people tell me to shut up. It was just so awesome seeing all the moves, new characters, Fatalities. I don’t think an arcade game ever got me as excited ever again.

StarCraft (PC): Gathering resources to build units to gather more resources to build more units to *falls asleep*. There’s a reason I routinely got my ass handed to me when I played multiplayer. I didn’t want to follow a perfect play cycle, I just wanted to make stealth jets that blew up alien bugs. The story was good enough at the time, too, which was a bonus.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (PS5): I like playing D&D, but scheduling 4-6 adults to meet regularly for 3-6 hours at the same time is the real end-boss. This game captures so much of what makes D&D fun while still being a v playable video game. Sneak past the enemy and stealthily obtain a huge advantage or Leroy Jenkins an entire goblin fortress? Both are possible!
