I don't get it, what do you mean Christianity is a way to excuse immoral behavior? /genq

I assume they're talking about people using the bible to excuse being homophobic/transphobic/etc all because it said ONE thing, and in most cases those are mistranslations anyway

by Rainie Rawr [โšข]; ; Report

Oh, I see. There are definitely some parts of the bible that tell us not to participate in some lgbtq behaviors , specifically one against being gay but it was never a way to allow people to bash others for what they believe in :/ย

by annieapplepies; ; Report

from the very beginning and still now, quotes from the bible are the main talking point for anti-lgbtq propaganda. the bible also greatly promotes the patriarchy and dehumanizes women very often

I truly believe that at least in these aspects, religion has done more harm than good. a concept that was meant to guide and give faith to people instead divides families everyday, including my own. I don't mean to offend, but religion (especially christianity) has done nothing but hurt me

by Rainie Rawr [โšข]; (edited); Report

I am sorry you've dealt with religion in such a way :( I can understand those who separate from the practices due to personal problems. I still have yet to educate myself more on Christianity since I am a catholicย

I feel like religion as a whole was a tactic created by elites to control and divide the common people,ย

Times have always been hard, so people for sure would've put their faith in some extraterrestrial god that would save them from their struggle, just like how some people now are begging the rich to save them.ย

We've seen religion be used in history to control people, like monarchies appointed by 'God' for example; Division is what's in the books, and what's spoken by those 'closest to God' (like a pastor or priest). A good example of this is that lines written in the Old/New testaments (I believe I'm quoting correctly, let me know if I'm wrong) sparked the idea that certain communities are sinners, like the LGBTQ+.ย

I could also argue that through times of struggle, people needed a light in the dark that they lived in, and that's where religion would come in. Faith, while you could be wrong, it wouldn't hurt to be wrong; and if you're right, then you lived knowing you wouldn't be in misery for much longer.ย

Youโ€™re acting like Christianity is the only thing that makes people awful, and thatโ€™s just not reality. Iโ€™m not even Christian and I understand the reality is that people donโ€™t need a belief system to act fucked up, humans in general can be awful all on their own.

And saying "thereโ€™s no evidence so thereโ€™s no point in believing anything" doesnโ€™t really make sense either. Thereโ€™s no concrete proof for plenty of things people believe in..science theories still evolve, history gets rewritten, and half of society believes things based on personal experience, not hard evidence.

So I donโ€™t get this post. It feels like youโ€™re blaming a whole religion for behavior thatโ€™s justโ€ฆ people being people

No. Dont reduce scientific theories to 'well we cant ENTIRELY prove it, its just a theory!' Lets not confuse scientific theories with conspiracy theories that any tinfoil hat wearing joe can make up and spread around. Scientific theories have mountains of evidence behind them, supported by thousands of scientists who devote their entire LIVES to studying their fields. If every single scientific record and everyones knowledge of existing science disappeared today, we would rediscover the exact same things tomorrow. We would come to the same conclusions, and form very similar if not the SAME theories to the ones we currently rely on. Scientific theories are refined CONSTANTLY with new evidence. This does not mean that science is unreliable. This means we change our minds when we are presented with new evidence. Scientists challenge our existing knowledge, existing theories, and each other. Do you believe in gravity, do you believe that atoms exist, do you believe the earth revolves around the sun? Those are all theories, but you wouldnt compare that to someone saying the earth is flat, even though its 'jUsT a ThEoRy' now would you?

Lets compare that to religion. What proof does anyone have for believing in god? Personal testimony, or just a feeling in their gut. Read, FAITH. Its literally called FAITH. Dont even try and compare that to scientific theories, with all their evidence and being proven time and time again. I literally dont give a shit if you believe in god, but you need to understand that belief in god because of your own experience is NOTHING EVEN REMOTELY COMPARABLE to an actual scientific theory. Faith cant be reliably tested.ย

Never spread this stupid argument again. Comparing bullshit conspiracy theories or faith to actual scientific theories backed by evidence just leads to misinformation. This is how people get decieved and hurt.ย

by alexanderspoison; ; Report

๐ŸคญYouโ€™re arguing against a point I didnโ€™t make. I never said scientific theories are "just guesses" or equal to conspiracy theories... YOU added that yourself. Humans believe things for different reasons. Some beliefs come from evidence, some from experience, some from culture, some from faith. That doesnโ€™t magically make people behave better or worse.

Youโ€™re acting like I compared gravity to religion, when all I said was that people believe things without absolute proof all the time! Including scientific theories that get refined as new evidence comes in. Thatโ€™s not an insult to science, thatโ€™s literally how science works.

Blaming Christianity as the reason people act horrible is just wrong. People donโ€™t need religion to be awful, and removing religion wouldnโ€™t suddenly make humanity kind. You can dislike religion without pretending itโ€™s the root cause of human behavior.

So no... Iโ€™m not spreading misinformation. Iโ€™m pointing out that your friendโ€™s post oversimplified human behavior, and your response is arguing with a version of my comment that you imagined, not the one I actually wrote.
Pointing out that humans don't need religion to be awful, and that human belief systems are complex, isn't "spreading misinformation." Itโ€™s stating reality. PLEASE GROW UP.

I wasnt arguing against your original point about 'christianity not being the reason for bad behavior', and i never said that part was spreading misinformation, so i dont know why you brought it up again. I did say "Lets not confuse scientific theories with conspiracy theories that any tinfoil hat wearing joe can make up and spread around." That was confusing, so ill say my point a bit more clearly. I meant that scientific theories are not comparable to proofless faith. At the end, I said "Comparing bullshit conspiracy theories or faith to actual scientific theories backed by evidence just leads to misinformation." I realize i brought up conspiracy theories again for no reason, so that was a mistake on my part. The reason i brought up conspiracy theories is because, like faith, they have flimsy or no evidence to support them.

Now, what I was arguing in my original reply was this specific point you made:

"And saying "thereโ€™s no evidence so thereโ€™s no point in believing anything" doesnโ€™t really make sense either. Thereโ€™s no concrete proof for plenty of things people believe in..science theories still evolve, history gets rewritten, and half of society believes things based on personal experience, not hard evidence."

The original poster did not say that 'since theres not CONCRETE proof for god, you should not believe in one.' They said that there is no evidence whatsoever for god, so theres no point in believing in one. Its true that theres no evidence for god. There being 'no point' is a personal belief.

Youre the one who brought up concrete proof. Youre the one who brought up scientific theories and compared them to faith. My entire argument was about how that is not a reasonable comparison whatsoever. To reiterate, there is plenty of evidence for all the widely accepted scientific theories, and no evidence for god. I never said that scientific theories have concrete proof. Literally nothing in the world has concrete proof for existing, so i obviously wasnt saying that.

Lastly, you said:

"Pointing out that humans don't need religion to be awful, and that human belief systems are complex, isn't "spreading misinformation." Itโ€™s stating reality. PLEASE GROW UP."

I never said that youre spreading misinformation by saying humans are awful without religion. I never said that youre spreading misinformation by saying that human belief systems are complex. I never even said that youre spreading misinformation at all. I said that youre spreading a bad argument that leads to misinformation, which is true. Dont tell me to grow up. Youre the 35 year old whos arguing with a 15 year old on the internet.ย

I sincerely do not mean to be hostile. I realize my original reply came off that way, and for that i apologize.

I never said christianity is the only thing that makes people awful however it is an excuse to do horrible things such as be homophobic, be sexist, be racist. Also youโ€™re arguing scientists are wayyy dumber than they actually are, in 2000 years of people being Christian there is no direct evidence god is even real however there is an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting evolution. Please do your research.

How is it an excuse?

โ€‹Do you accept it? Who else accepts it? Nobody.

โ€‹You're making their Christianity their excuse to be shitty people. You're making their Christianity their excuse. YOU.

by โ‹† ๐’œ๐“‚๐‘’๐“‰๐’ฝ๐“Ž๐“ˆ๐“‰ ๐’Ÿ๐“‡๐‘’๐’ถ๐“‚ โ‹†; ; Report

please fix your grammar omg, but anyway they make it their excuse by saying what theyโ€™ve said/done is okay because it says its okay in the bible. Example: in Deuteronomy 22 it says โ€œIf a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,ย he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.โ€ which a man could make an excuse for rape.

by Alexandr; ; Report

Why are you quoting a book written by men thousands of years ago as if it proves anything about modern Christians? Youโ€™re not exposing Christianity, youโ€™re just using old scripture to validate your own dislike of Christians.I already told you: humans are awful on their own. People will use anything as an excuse, politics, trauma, personal labels, astrology, whatever. That doesnโ€™t mean the thing theyโ€™re referencing is the cause. It means theyโ€™re shitty people looking for a shield. And dragging out Deuteronomy like itโ€™s a โ€˜gotchaโ€™ doesnโ€™t prove Christianity is the excuse, it proves you want it to be. Most Christians donโ€™t follow ancient laws, donโ€™t justify rape, and donโ€™t use the Bible the way youโ€™re claiming. Youโ€™re projecting the worst behavior of a few onto an entire group.Anyway, Iโ€™m done here. Youโ€™re not arguing in good faith, youโ€™re just trying to hate Christians and make it sound intellectual. Talk to yourself.
