to put it short. it was about africa and christianity, the girl claimed that the reason africa is so underdeveloped is because they have a lot of churches. sounds stupid, right? well, because it is!
africa is not underdeveloped because of religion, if we took that logic and applied it to a country like the US which is also a christian-dominated country then they should be underdeveloped as well. but, this also made me realize that not many people are actually aware (or choose to be ignorant) of the reason why africa of all continents is not as developed as europe, north america and some parts of asia.
for those who don't know, africa had been colonized and exploited by the west and west asia (commonly known as the middle east) and the continent still continues to be exploited today. its not the religion holding it back per se, its the western world that is holding it back

I really appreciate this post because it highlights how important historical context is. It's so easy to look at the current state of a country or continent and assume it's the result of one simple factor, when in reality history leaves consequences that can last for centuries.
Africa is an incredibly diverse continent with 54 countries, different cultures, languages, and political systems, so it's impossible to explain its situation with a single reason like religion. Understanding the effects of colonialism is essential. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, European powers divided much of Africa among themselves, extracting resources, drawing borders that ignored existing communities, and building economies designed to benefit the colonizers rather than the local population. Even after many countries gained independence, they often inherited unstable institutions, economies dependent on exporting raw materials, and political conflicts that were rooted in that colonial period.
And even today, many African countries still face unequal trade relationships, foreign exploitation of natural resources, debt, and external political influence. None of this means that Africa is "doomed" or incapable of development, there are many countries across the continent experiencing economic growth, innovation, and cultural flourishing, but it does show why history matters when trying to understand the present.
I think this is true for almost every region in the world. If we ignore history, we end up believing simplistic explanations for incredibly complex realities. Learning about the past isn't just about memorizing dates, it's about understanding why the world looks the way it does today!!!
exactly!! i feel like people on social media platforms (especially apps like tiktok) usually have a surface level understanding of politics and history which leads them to having very.. interesting opinions on some stuff
