୨୧ ───────── ୨୧

Do we live in a world where kindness has become so unfamiliar that people mistake it for other emotions? Why can a simple compliment become a confession of feelings that were never there to begin with? Must there ALWAYS be a double meaning?

Why is it that when I tell someone their outfit looks nice, they assume I must have ulterior motives? Can’t I just think something about you is nice without wanting something in return? Can't I just wish to brighten your day and comment on something I simply like?

Sometimes, I check up on someone because I care. Sometimes, I offer compliments because I mean them and nothing more. Sometimes, I help strangers because I see them struggling and have the opportunity to make things a little easier. There are no confessions or hidden intentions. Sometimes, I’m simply being nice.

And yet, people sometimes confess feelings to me after only weeks of talking.

I don’t understand how people can fall so quickly. How can a few kind words become a confession, or a week of knowing someone become a declaration of love? I don’t mean to judge anyone for it, but how can you be so certain of someone you’ve barely begun to know? There’s still so much to learn about a person, even when those first few conversations feel out of this world.

Being seen is not the same as being loved.

I feel guilty even complaining about it. How strange it sounds to say that being wanted like that can feel lonely, when all you want is something as simple as a friend. Someone to laugh with, share interests with, and talk about the most ridiculous things with.

Nothing less and nothing more.

Is there such a thing as being too kind for other reasons? Not because kindness itself is a flaw, but because of the people who receive it. The ones who belittle everything you do, who seem to find joy in making others miserable?

I’ve been told time and time again that I’m too nice. “Oh, Vanity, you’re too sweet!” Which should be a compliment. Until it’s not. Suddenly, I’m told I need to stand up for myself, stop being so forgiving, and stop giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I’m sorry I’m just trying to help and be understanding?

Maybe the problem isn’t kindness itself, but the idea that being kind means being endlessly available. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean allowing them to hurt you again, and understanding someone doesn’t mean accepting everything they do. I can care about someone and still say no. I can understand someone and still decide I need distance from them.

So why should I become colder just to survive in this twisted world? I don’t want to look at every person I meet and wonder what they want from me. I don’t want to turn every compliment into a calculation or every act of kindness into a transaction.

And this brings me to something else I’ve never quite understood...

Why does it sometimes feel as though people would rather expect the worst than leave room for something hopeful?

I know there are reasons people become the way they are, and I can’t fully judge them because I have never walked in their shoes. I genuinely wish I could understand what goes on in somebody’s head sometimes. Does anyone else question these things as much as I do?

It feels as though negativity has become the easier thing to reach for. As though happiness must be an act, or anyone who sees the good in things must be foolish or pretending. Why is it so difficult to look for the good without immediately searching for the bad?

Maybe I’m naïve because I’m still a kid, or maybe I’m simply expecting too much. But I have never understood the appeal of making the world uglier when you could make it better. I understand having a bad day, struggling, and seeing the worst in things. But why should those feelings determine how we treat everyone around us? You shouldn’t treat others badly just because YOU had a bad day. That’s just a lame excuse.

People can change. Not overnight, not because of some GRAND IDEA, but because they decide to try. You can wake up one morning and decide to be gentler with your words, more patient, and more willing to recognize when you’ve hurt someone. It will ALWAYS be hard at first, but isn’t that true of anything worth learning?

And then there are sayings along the lines of, “Expect nothing, and you won’t be disappointed.”

But what a lonely way to live.

If we expect nothing, do we stop hoping? If we stop hoping, do we stop trying? I know thinking positively doesn’t mean everything will turn out well. TRUST ME, I HAVE EXPERIENCE. But there’s a difference between acknowledging that things can go wrong and living as though they inevitably will.

I don’t want to spend my life expecting the worst from everyone. I don’t want to assume that every kind gesture has a hidden meaning or that every person I meet will eventually disappoint me. Maybe I’m too hopeful sometimes, but I’d rather leave room for good things to happen than convince myself they never will.

Sigh.

I see people laughing at each other instead of helping each other. I see kindness treated as something embarrassing, as though caring about another person is somehow ridiculous.

Why?

If I see somebody in the hallway drop their things, why should I need to know them before I help? Why should their reputation or other people’s opinions determine whether I treat them with BASIC DECENCY? And why should the way other people perceive someone determine whether helping them makes ME a good or bad person? If my intentions are simply to help, why should it matter who they are? Especially if I don’t know them?

You’re a stranger to SO many people, so who even cares at the end of the day? Maybe our actions seem small in a world so big, but helping one person might make their day a little easier. Isn’t that enough? Maybe that’s why some people don’t bother, because the world feels so big that they think their actions don’t matter.

This is something I have to question in myself, too. I feel hypocritical. I’ve blocked people I never really gave a chance simply because they were friends with someone who hurt me. I understand why I did it, but I also recognize how easily we judge someone based on the people around them instead of who they actually are. So I see both sides.

Of course, this doesn’t mean I owe everyone my trust or friendship. I can protect myself without assuming I know everything about someone I’ve never spoken to, or that one thing they do defines them.

A simple act of kindness can be given to practically anyone, though. That doesn’t mean I have to be friends with everyone, trust everyone, or let everyone into my life. It just means I can choose to treat someone with basic decency without needing to know their entire story first.

And there’s another thing I don’t understand: the way some people treat the very friends they claim to care about.

I’ve never understood friendships built on constant judging and joking, where somebody will ALWAYS be the punchline. I understand teasing. I do it myself, and people do it to me. There’s a kind of laughter that comes from knowing someone well enough to joke with them.

But there’s a difference between laughing WITH someone and laughing AT someone.

And maybe this is something I take a little more personally than I let on to the people I talk to and know. It’s difficult to talk about kindness without thinking about the times I’ve experienced the opposite myself. I’m dealing with that right now, actually, which makes writing about this feel a little more personal than I originally intended when I started writing this a few weeks back.

It’s strange how you’re sometimes expected to laugh along, even when someone’s words genuinely hurt your feelings. You’re expected to act like you don’t care about something when it truly does matter to you. And I don’t think being hurt by someone’s words makes you weak, oversensitive, or incapable of taking a joke. I know I’m strong, and I know everybody is strong in their own ways. You can be strong and still have moments of weakness.

How can you call someone your friend if they repeatedly make you feel terrible about yourself, though? How can you claim to care about someone and then dismiss their feelings when they tell you you’ve hurt them? As though you’re not responsible for your actions, and they’re simply too sensitive?

A friendship shouldn’t require you to make yourself smaller to keep someone else comfortable. You should be able to laugh, be silly, make mistakes, and exist without wondering when the next insult will arrive disguised as affection. You shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells or constantly filter yourself around someone you call a friend.

Of course, we’re all capable of making mistakes, and sometimes we hurt people without meaning to. But there’s a difference between making a mistake, taking responsibility, and repeatedly hurting someone who has already told you how they feel. And there is a big line between respecting them and disregarding them. Making excuses for yourself doesn’t change ANYTHING.

Simply writing this today feels a little strange, because we actually had an assembly about bullying at school (ignoring the fact it was supposed to be about drugs). The superintendent came down to talk about the legal side of things, too. Cyberbullying can have serious consequences, and the things we say to people can affect them more than we realize. It’s worth taking a moment to think before speaking or posting something hurtful. You never know what someone else is going through, and choosing kindness can make a bigger difference than you think.

I think that’s worth remembering, especially when people try to excuse their behavior as “just a joke.” Law doesn’t care what you think or what you say. If it was seen as harmful, it will be taken as harmful. Make your meanings clear and don’t say something you can’t take back no matter how much you want to say it.

So.

Maybe that’s what bothers me most about all of this. Not simply that people misunderstand me, or that some people choose to be unkind. It’s that kindness, something so simple, can become so complicated.

A compliment CAN become a confession. Concern CAN become an obligation. A friendship CAN become an expectation. A joke CAN become an excuse to hurt someone. There are so many possibilities that it honestly makes my head spin. Why must I be an expert on understanding all these things?

Why must there be so many hidden meanings attached to kindness? It can be used dishonestly, to manipulate someone or hurt them, but that doesn’t mean it’s intended to be used that way. Does the same apply to things like anger and sadness? Can negative stigmas be used for a good cause? Maybe I need to turn my perspective upside down.

So, I’m upside down on the couch as I finish writing this !!

Maybe that’s the hardest part of all of this: accepting that I can’t control how everyone perceives me. I can be as honest as possible, explain my intentions, and try my best to be considerate, but someone might still misunderstand me. I can’t make everyone see things the way I do, and I can’t always prevent someone from getting the wrong idea.

Maybe I will be misunderstood. Maybe someone will mistake my kindness for something it isn’t. Maybe I’ll give someone the benefit of the doubt only to discover they never intended to give me the same courtesy. It’s such a pain sometimes, and I can see why others give up. Taking the negative route appears to be much easier.

But there truly is beauty in being kind in a world gone so cruel.

There’s something beautiful about helping someone who cannot repay you, complimenting someone who may never compliment you back, and caring about people without expecting anything in return. There’s something beautiful about brightening someone’s day simply because you can, even if you get nothing in return.

I can have boundaries without building walls around everything good in me. I can recognize cruelty without deciding that everyone is cruel. I can accept that the world is imperfect without abandoning the hope that it can be better.

I don’t think the world needs more people who expect the worst from one another. We have plenty of that. I think it needs more people willing to consider perspectives beyond their own, to be kind, and to try to understand one another.

I truly hope I never become so afraid of being misunderstood that I forget how to make someone feel understood. I want to share my experiences and let people see who I really am. I hope I never feel like I have to hide my true self. Maybe I’m too honest in that aspect, putting my life out there, which I can be sometimes.

I just wish that more people got me for me. The good and the bad. The negative and the positive. It can be hard sometimes, but you stick with those you care about through those conflicting moments. Isn’t that truly what friends are for? Family? The people you genuinely care about?

And I hope we remember that we don’t need to love everyone to treat them with love, that we don’t need to know someone’s story to offer them compassion, and that we don’t need to expect something in return to give something good.

Maybe there is such a thing as being too nice.

Truly! It makes me worry for people because I'm just being nice? Like, have you never felt kindness before? :( And it upsets ME a lot when it happens, because it's like you don't know ME, you know a small sliver of me that you've known for a few days...

You should absolutely NOTT feel guilty about complaining because it is a very valid complaint and concern. Being kind, understanding, and sweet doesn't have to come with the cost of losing the ability to stand up for yourself. If those you're communicating with ALSO wish to be helpful and understanding, they should be willing to talk about lines that are overstepped, or walk away for a while if they're angry to avoid saying something rude in the moment. If the methods turn malicious on their end, you don't have to be unkind, but you also don't need to give so much of yourself to maintaining that connection. You don't need to resort to rude words, but you also don't need to hold the same hands that harmed you. You could be cordial without being cold too!

When it comes to stuff like this, it's the world that needs to change, more than it's you. Being negative is so exhausting; I don't fully get how so many people would rather go that route than try to be kinder. Sure, there are bad days, and a lot of times the world has problems. People can be sad, people can be angry about many things in the world. It's a problem when you start taking it out on people who have done nothing wrong. It is so sad watching people go out of their way to dim others' light just because. Like, great, we're both miserable... what did that fix? It may be brutally honest because that's their honest view of the world, but that doesn't make it the truth.

Also VERY real </3 saying like that don't really fix mindsets, it oftentimes makes it worse. Sure plenty of things can go wrong and will, but what about all the things that can go wrong and DON'T. All the times idk a meteor could have made us the dinosaurs 2.0, but instead we just got light rain and a rainbow after!

And with expecting the worst from people, that's why friends are so important to have. People who you know and love to remind you how great people can be. I don't think people are inherently good are bad, I think they are just people. They can make the choice to be either and that's what is so cool about us. There are so many people who make the choice to be the kindest they can be every day.

Honestly laughing instead of helping is just so...evil:( The same energy it take to do that could've gone to helping or even just asking if they're okay. The very same people who laugh would go on full-on villain monologues about how messed up everyone else is if the same happened to them, so I don't get it. So, the larger group may not accept you...is their approval worth it? Okay, you're an outcast, you and the other person can be outcasts together.

The blocking isn't fully hypocritical, because you are not being malicious and are actively trying to see the best in others while also protecting yourself. Maybe you'll have some close calls and block a few people who weren't a danger, but you still have many friends and others who you treat with kindness, and who do the same. Not letting everyone in is different from shutting everyone out.

Friends shouldn't make jokes to harm one another, and if they do, the affected person should be ALLOWED to be upset and let their friends know. If they get mad at that person it shows that they care more about the joke and what they can gain than their friend.

When people use the excuse of bullying their freinds of "oh, you know how i joke" the same could be said the other way. Do you not know your friend enough to know what harms them? Do you not care?

Even the most sound structures need maintenance from time to time. No person should have to live through a friendship of being constantly berated. I make some jokes here and there with my friends, but I KNOW them enough to know what hurts, and I avoid that. Even if we do go towards the line a bit with each other, we actually show with our words and actions that we all genuinely care about each other, so it isn't an issue. You can't have a friendship of all harmful jokes with no love at all in the relationship; that isn't a friendship, it's mutual disdain.

LAW REFERENCE WHOOHOO( literally bawling my eyes out) but truly, I've realized that a lot of people weren't taught proper apologies or consequences growing up. At the end of the day, your actions had a negative consequence. "I'm sorry you're mad" and "I'm sorry for what I said" are COMPLETELY different things.

Upside down vanity? Upside down cake? Upside down tea party? Curiouser and curioser...

I think the negative route feels good for a while, probably feeling a bit powerful, but it fades so fast and makes you so miserable. Then it just repeats, making your constant negativity the switch that turns off someone else's kindness.

The beauty of it all is the freedom we have to be kind and choose it when we can. Plenty of gardens didn't just sprout; they were planted and nurtured every day. The best part of it all is having people to share it with and those people can help you make sure you don't lose yourself in the darker corners when the sun goes down.

HOLYY MOLY I WROTE SO MUCH MY BAD VANITY 〒▽〒 HAVE THE BEST DAY STAY SWEET LIKE TEA AND BE KINDD!! LOVE YOU MY GOAT!! <3

OKAY LETS GO !! IT'S OKAY ANGEL !! ILY SO SO MUCH AND LIKE I SAID THIS IS EXACTLYYYY WHAT I WAS HOPING FOR !! We are THEEEE yappers and deserve to yap about stuff without any worries !! YOU BETTER HAVE HAD THE BESTTT DAY EVER BECAUSE MINE WAS PRETTY AWESOME SAUCE !! :doughboy:

OKAY OKAY OKAY. Already... YOU GET IT. I honestly think it's because so many people don't experience you know... KINDNESS. Many people don't use it and I'm saying that like it's optional but again I VIEW IT AS BASIC DECENCY. It's something you can choose, yes, but it's like YOU SHOULD BE SHOWN KINDNESS AND NOT BE NOT SHOWN ?? The fact some people DON'T get treated with equal kindness is VERY SAD. Obviously there truly is some people who don't deserve it... but if it's simply based off how they look it's just totally invalid and deeply upsets me.

As for the whole knowing you thing that also upsets me a LOT !! You probably don't like me for me... you don't know the good and the bad... and you just know this tiny bit of me that's trying to be nice because you know I was taught to treat strangers with kindness and respect !! Get to know me better FOR MONTHS and see all of me before making an actual decision !! ^-^

OKAY THANK YOU THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT ?? Kindness doesn't mean you AREN'T sticking up for yourself, you are, just in a way you're being the BIGGER PERSON and not throwing a tantrum over it. There's a better way I can word this but I CAN'T BE BOTHERED RIGHT NOW LOL ꉂ(˵˃ ᗜ ˂˵)

My mom ALWAYS taught me to walk away for a moment and think when something upsets me !! Honestly like anger issues runs in my family and it all bubbles up so we get into a TON of arguments. But. We walk away and take a breath when we recognize it happening. You should be allowed to walk away and think and not be forced to also work something out in the moment. People can be pushy about that sort of thing and it's like I DON'T WANT TO BE MEAN BUT I'M UPSET RIGHT NOW ?? Let me take a breath first and then we can actually communicate like we're supposed to... if you keep pushing so hard something is going to BREAK

EXACTLY !! Negative mindsets impact other people !! Not always.. but when it's basically the only thing you talk about... YOU'RE JUST RAINING ON BOTH OUR PARADES !! Who knows who else is also listening so at this point just add ruining 5 other peoples days to the equation ?? Might be a bit dramatic but either way the amount of people you interact with probably have their little light dimmed if you keep snuffing it out. It's a big issue in my opinion when something like that happens !! You shouldn't take everything out on others, you need to focus on yourself if that truly is happening. I promise it's not the people around you... it's probably you.

And that sounds a little mean. It might truly never be you, and it's everyone around you, which is how I feel. But not for being negative, for being positive. Everyone around me is so negative it makes me question my own self. But then again, if people pull away constantly or seem upset around you, just focus on what you're saying and if people would be negatively impacted by it. I understand impulses, but can you just pause for a second before you scream out for the 10th time that you can't do something ?? It ruins my mood over the work we're supposed to be doing together and now everyone feels bad...

BINGOOO FOCUSING ON THE POSTIVE PARTS !! I think it's something like for every negative thing that happens to you, you need 3 POSITIVE things to redeem it. No wonder people are in so much debt. Again, I understand having a bad day and only seeing the negative. But just take a moment to look back on those good moments and see how far you have come !! Truly you have come so far even if you don't think so !! There's so many positive things in a day, LIKE SIMPLY WAKING UP IN THE MORNING !! ( ˶ˆᗜˆ˵ )

Truly it is why it's so important !! Friends and family that have your back is the BEST feeling possible. They're TRULY with you through the good and the bad and see all sides of you and love you for it !! They help you see the positive in those bad moments or even if they're having a bad day, give you a relatable view. It's the people like that who truly show kindness in its purest form in my opinion !! :3c

Exactly !! Sometimes I laugh like when a guy purposefully falls behind me on the stairs or you know, comedically slips on a banana peel !! That's a FUNNY TIME. It ISN'T funny when somebody genuinely falls or drops their things or anything of the sort !! Laughing in times like those is just hurtful and you could instead help them, instead of just watching. Or laughing. Or whispering. And you ARE right, if they were in that position they would complain about the same exact thing they were just doing... ໒꒰՞ ܸ. .ܸ՞꒱ა

It truly shows you never know your ACTUAL thoughts on something until you've done it or been in the position to do it !! "I don't like x", but have you ever attempted that hobby or act ?? I know it's kinda annoying when people say, "Well you haven't actually DONE IT so you can't have an opinion on it!", but they're semi-right about it !! Do you ACTUALLY know what it feels like to do that thing, or are you just listening and following others ??

Outcasts !! Honestly LOVE watching movies or shows on it.. it's the true definition of being yourself and having no shame in it !! Plus they tend to be the coolest people ever and society judt doesn't like different !! o7

THE BLOCKING PART THANK YOU !! See that's why I thought it was two different things !! You can't truly compare two different topics like that to the same exact ONE idea. True definition of rather being safe then being sorry LOLOL !! Blocking someone out of defending yourself and then yeah the opposite

EXACTLYYYY !! Making jokes like that about your friends should be at a point where you know what hurts them and what doesn't !! If you don't know that yet you guys probably aren't friends and maybe you do and you're just being a jerk ?? Either way don't make the joke if you know it's gonna hurt them or maybe not but there's harmful meaning to it. And truly make sure to actually take their emotions into consideration if they say it hurts and you think it wouldn't. I know I've said some things I didn't know were harmful and I corrected my behavior... it's as simple as that.

SPEAKING OFFFF STRUCTURES !! THEY'RE MEANT TO WOBBLE IN SOME PLACES !! Like your emotions !! You don't need to have one set emotion and be strong all the time, it's good to get it out. They need maintenance too, LIKE US. Correction is good. Don't bottle things up and actually be open about things !!

LAW REFERENCE !! PARTY TIME !! (lit also bawling my eyes out). ALSO YEAH UPSIDE DOWN TIME TOO ?? Curiosity killed the cat...

CALLING IT A WRAP !! YAAHHOOO !! GOOD ENOUGH I GUESS ?? THAT WAS FUN EHEHHEE

YESS THEE YAPPPERS EVER!! AND I DID HAVE THE GREATEST DAY!! I'M SO GLAD YOU DID TOO:banana:

Yeah there are tons of people who haven't got to experience a lot of genuine kindness and it sucks </3

Esp when it's based on looks, because it honestly ties back into the original statement of people interpreting compliments as flirting. Like if you're only nice to people you deem as pretty, do you only view people through the lens of potential romantic relationships? Are they not people to you outside of that?

AND YESS!! See me for me, not the good parts that are filtered. ^_^

YUPYUP NP!! Your wording is fine dww! ☆*: .。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆ Let's gooo! Our moms gave us very similar advice!

It may hurt to hear, but yes! Sometimes a single person IS the problem, but they could always try changing their mindset and restarting!

REALL LOL negative day debt is crayzzz</3 There is something positive in pretty much everything! You just gotta take the time and see it!!\(@^0^@)/

You get it omgg!! The joy I get from hanging around my friends and family truly does embody the purest form of kindness!

There actually was a time my friend tripped on a banana peel at school〒▽〒 (I live in Looney Tunes confirmed??) But yes!! There's a time and place! Not everything is funny in every situation; sometimes you gotta be serious and actually do something.

THE REALEST BTW!! I really don't like it when people are super critical about others when they've never been in that situation :( AND YES SEMI-RIGHT! In some cases you can know yourself well enough to go "I'd NEVER do that", but in stressful situations, people can and will behave out of character.

So so true! Loveee outcast stories <3

Of course of course!! I used to be super nervous about blocking people or limiting contact with others, but sometimes it really is better to be safe than sorry LOLL:d:

YESS!! Like my friends and I took a WHILE to make the jokes that we make, because we didn't know each other that well at the start! I think there's only been one time I made a joke that hurt a friend, but they told me, and I've been more careful since then...some people act liek you've told them to invent flying pigs just for pointing out that a joke was harmful.

OMG YESS STRUCTURE METAPHOR !! Truly though, we were meant for so much more than just being sad, neutral, or happy 24/7! It's okay to feel all kinds of different emotions; variety is nice (Vanity issss nicer though hehehe).

PARTY TIME!! (bawling twins)! Buttttt satisfaction brought it back!!!

SIGNING OFF!! WHOOHOO!! THE MOST FUN EVER!  MWHEHEH

I feel like this made me think and idk I feel like I’ve had all mistakes I’ve made come through in my head and what are my true feelings about people and people I care about(do I care about these people or some of them?! Why do I stick with people). I guess I agree with most of everything you said so yeah.

Literally THE thinker !!

Hey, we all make mistakes, and it's part of learning. Sometimes what you think may be reality !! But sometimes it isn't. What matters is how you deal with it and move on or learn from it !!

I know you got this !! I question who I truly care about and who I put up with and FOR WHAT ?? CONSTANTLY. It's always changing so it's hard to sit down and be like oh I care about x but don't consider y to be close to me.

Happy you could agree with majority of it !! :doughboy:

Thanks. I am literally the thinker but I wish I’m not  I just want to know about myself once I know that I feel like everything will get 1000000000% better in life!

Honestly that’s valid. But if I consider someone my friend I want to be able to actually feel bad for this person and know that I care and not just saying stuff. I just don’t understand myself and second guess to much 😔

Yeah kindness should be free and everyone should be able to have it and not think twice about why they have you it.
