Genderqueer people from history

Still in time for Pride!

Masha P. Johnson is thought to have thrown the first brick during the Stonewall riots, marked as a significant event in LGBTQIA+ people demanding the same rights as anyone else.

But there certainly transgender people before her.

Now, before I give you a list of historical names to look into, all people who died decades or even centuries ago, please understand that the word 'transgender' didn't exist, and it can't quite be known what these individuals identified themselves as. But considering their commitment to living as a gender other than the one they were declared at birth it why I've included them.

I'd like you to take the time to look up one or two of these people. Or all of them!

In no particular order:

Thomasine Hall

Public Universal Friend

Eleanor Rykener

Dora Richter

Billy Tipton

Albert Cashier

Lucy Hicks Andserson

Charley Parkhurst

Mrs. Nash

James Barry

Wendy Carlos

Lynn Conway

Wilmer Broadnax

Jackie Shane

Harry Allen

Antonio de Erauso

Barbara Ann Wilcox

There are more of course.

And I'm sure that even if we list them all, there are many, many more who we never could know about.
