Humbled by the ocean

Y'know, the ocean has a funny way of putting arrogance and stupidity right in its place.

Today, we went to the beach for a bit. A lovely day, took a lunch out and everything. Had our lunch, went for a walk, the whole nine yards.

As we got back from the walk, we decided to go for a swim. And Ben told me—he told me—to take off my glasses. And I, like a damned fool, said Nah. I don't plan to do anything more than wade. The waves are calm, and I want to make sure I can see my way back. I'll just grab them if I go under and hold tight.

Damned idiot. Now I am at home, completely without glasses. I've moved my monitor as close as I can have it be, but even that isn't enough to let me see very well.

We stopped by the optician's place to order a new pair. $267. We had to put it on an emergency care card to be able to afford it. They won't even be ready for a week. The interest rate for the care card goes up by 30%.

Y'know, losing my glasses might not have even been the worst part. It was the wave that took them. It came out of nowhere and slammed into the back of my head. Knocked me off my feet, sent my glasses into the drink, everything. The adrenaline hit and my whole body felt like lead. As I was pulling myself back to shore, I kept falling, and Ben had to help pull me back up. I couldn't breathe. My legs felt like jello. It was scary. It was humiliating.

Anyway, since I can't see worth a damn, I may be sticking to my phone and my switch for the next few days.

Consider my lesson learned. Never think you're bigger than you are. 😕
