Things I hate about IG

I don't want my blog posts to get too depressing, but today I'm feeling cranky, and I swear, I cant' open Instagram anymore without feeling annoyed.

So I'm gonna list some things that I can't stand anymore about the platform.

1. Carousels

I swear, whoever came up with this idea of having to write paragraphs on photo slides to share thoughts could have just mind their own business that day.

Every time I open Instagram, there are carousels, and the sad thing is that they’re often created specifically to promote a service, a personal brand, or a success story that’ll push you to buy an online course.

They all seem so fake to me, and they’re basically all identical.

2. People who try to lecture you

Speaking of social media carousels, there’s one type I just can’t stand: educational carousels.

“Why you shouldn’t do this”

“3 Reasons to Always Smile”

“5 Signs You’re Traumatized”

And more often than not, the people who share them are the ones who feel entitled to lecture you.
Don’t get me wrong, I also believe that social media is a very effective tools to share ideas, but when someone shares only that kind of content, I start to wonder what they’re thinking about their circle of friends: that they’re a bunch of idiots who need to be educated?
In my experience, the people who share these things all the time have all turned out to be arrogant and felt superior to others. And I just can’t stand it anymore.

3. Start a small business

When I scroll through Reels, it seems to me that every single hobby has turned into a side hustle, a small business.
If you’re creative and happen to spend time on social media following other creatives, you’ll get the impression that everyone in the world has started their own little business, maybe selling stickers, prints, and so on.
And maybe it’s just me feeling insecure, but I feel like even I, someone who can draw and do various things, I am somehow “wasting my talent,” when being creative should actually be an activity free from the need to make money off of it. Even when watching these business owners, you can see in their videos the frustration of having to take time away from their actual business to create content and make videos with the latest trending audio...it’s really awful.

I can't think of anything else (maybe I'm just a hater) but these are all things I actually think. What can I do about it? If there are other things that bother you, comment below.

I think more people feel this way but you won't really hear about it unless it becomes a topic people can monetise, and even when people do talk about it, it's never through third spaces anymore since those are being removed and instead conversations are happening through 'Reels' or TikTok, or whatever platform which is popular which quite literally IS becoming the nu-third space so to speak, only, they're a mere shallow mirage of what used to be and do not foster the same community, change, or relationships that third spaces once used to and instead we have Influencers masquerading as your 'Internet bestie' basically someone whom you can 'trust' or someone whom you can relate to or even someone whom you want to become but even the becoming is manufactured by the platform and the influencers. People online are not real, social media is not a space that fully exists in reality; I point to A.I for my main example of this, followed by the whole face tuning/photoshop/filter phenomena, and Influencers, or 'Content creators' which is a bullshit rebrand anyways, and since the platform rewards Influencers who conform to lying to people, or who cater to the algorithm, the majority of what you'll see is all of the above. Social Media isn't 'Social' anymore but simply a way for people to make money through ad-revenue, sponsorships/brand deals, and your attention and investment into the creator/creators videos. It's why they'll spin a random, usually, bullshit, story in which the context usually includes a sad sob story or simply anything that catches your attention since your attention span is the currency the platforms profit from. The idea is to make you feel like you're missing out if you're not constantly on the platform, create insecurity in you where there is none, all at the cost of your mental health. Whatever keeps you on the platform. Almost every hobby on those platforms is commodified. It's time people abandoned or were less reliant on them lest ye fall to the same beast time and time again.
