I hate today’s internet it’s filled with hatred and anger and everyone is trying to normalize it. THEY ARE TRYING TO NORMALIZE BULLYING!! It’s so disgusting and weird. and making so many generative ai i hate it so much. the internet is mean and i get called “sensitive” or “corny” for expressing my concerns and opinions. I know the internet is filled with trolls but it’s not even trolling. it’s just racism, sexism, and homophobia.  and it’s just not funny. The internet is so draining and no one takes other seriously. :/

but i’m done ranting

yup this platform is the only place i've ever actually posted myself on because of this. On here, I'm not risking being completely obliterated by literal thousands of randoms who want me to die. I already get hate replies on my tiktok comments just cause the trans flag is in my name like ok

Twitter is a whole other problem

its sad because its not even like the internet's gotten worse from in the past to now. it's just stayed the same. you'd think after all these decades there'd be some improvement but nope barely any

Yeah, actually what rlly bothers me is that on instagram for ex, theres always smth happening in every second and im surrounded with ppl who i dont want to be, im afraid to post myself because of the bullies. This is a safe place tho i can be who i am finally

People on the internet have always been haters, but they'd get called out as a hater and then everyone would move on. Now it's like everyone wants to try and come up with some huge moral reason on why people should be hated, when really it ain't that deep because it's the internet.
I honestly blame short form content, as it sapped away people's critical thinking skills and feels so much more easier to be exposed to hateful content.

Fr modern social media is just filled with anger and hatred. I can't believe people like using these apps despite the toxic community. The scariest thing is that I didn't realize this problem before getting my phone confiscated and joining FriendRewind.

Et c'est ✨aukay✨

the invention of the for you feed caused people to live in bubbles. used to be that if someone was like (random example) "i hate italians they should all choke on their spaghetti" everyone would be like "wtf dude get out of here loser" and they'd be booted. you were exposed to a variety of people on forums like this one.

nowadays if you post "i hate italians they should all choke on their spaghetti" you'll be greeted with a flood of people who also hate italians and want them to choke on their spaghetti, and your feed will fill with anti-italian content. and that makes you go "aha see, most people also hate italians! that's why there's so many of these posts!" it reinforces your internal biases because you're only exposed to the familiar over and over.

i think that's what causes so much anger on normal social media... there's also a related problem. let's say there was a mass shooting in your town or something and you wanted to find out the day of the memorial service. you only looked this up because you wanted one piece of information. suddenly the algorithm goes "oh! this person wants ALL the information on violent crime!" and floods you with upsetting content for weeks even if you try countering it with other searches.

immensely frustrating especially as a small creative that has to utilize the algorithm to build a fanbase. sighhhhh. (-.-)

@mallrat you are one smart cookie my friend. right. on. the. dot. i hate for-you algorithms..sometimes i feel as though this is the dystopia people in the 90's were talking about..  i miss when the internet wasn't finely curated to your tastes and actually exposed you to diverse people... :(

@elizathelizard i study psychology for fun. i know way more about this than the average person, and i believe that the average person should be taught about a lot of it before adulthood as part of internet literacy.

i think some targeting is permissible because like it or not it helps small businesses connect with their customer base without breaking the bank. but the hyper-targeting/intrusive data collection of the current state of the web is, to me, an issue that is potentially even bigger than the ai prevalence problem. i've seen plenty of people go "ok yeah i'm bored with ai chatbots/image gen now, give me humans again please" as they begin to memorize patterns in the generated output. i rarely find people saying "hey my for you feed is getting stale, i need a change of pace."

i sometimes wish i was filthy fuckin' rich so i could fund studies on this to find the roots of the problem to stop it. sadly i am not a famous psychologist. i will say the lawsuits against google and meta are immensely interesting to me and i'm looking forward to seeing what restrictions that will bring.

Unfortunately these kinds of posts and comments get attention. Social media is a numbers game. People care more about going viral more than being kind. Algorithms reward attention, so people keep making it, and it gets seen by more eyes. Then the copycats come in, and replicate this behaviour for the same reason. It's a never ending spiral of attention seeking and pushing.

I feel asleep!

everything is ragebait. find your zen

EXACTLY! everyone tries so annoyingly hard to be ''cool'' never being their own person, GOSH its like robots just mindless zombies, i kinda feel bad doe becuz these people obviously dont know who they are and just cling like a leech to whatevers trending. this is why you have to stick to old-timey websites like these that arent over-populated with users. and then suddenly the interwebs are fun again...X-X...god i miss old internet,,where everything was not happening all at once, slow paced and patient users not like today where everyones dopamine addicted and waiting like hyenas to hate on whatever people want to hate on in the moment..

I don't think I could agree even more adamantly. Unfortunately, in more wide-spread places, harsher and more vitriolic themes will be present simply because of the lack of moderation or care put into those spaces. People can also say anything behind a screen and, nine times out of ten, get away with it. It's cowardly, pathetic, and disappointing.

unfortunately the loudest get heard the most and hateful people are usually the loudest

That’s so real like I was on yt shorts on a vid of a sped kid and I was expecting really bad stuff but nope but on TikTok all I would see was them being flamend also on today’s internet a like 80 year only hit on me😭

ppl hate those who r cringy more than those who r bigoted or actually harmful nowadays...o(TヘTo)

bro the hatred has been there since day one! you don't know hate and anger til you got on mic in COD and Halo! Like it was way way way worse back in the 2000's! Be GREATFUL for cancel culture kiddos :D

Modern social media is actually so gross. AI generated stuff looks so bad and some people are using it to create propaganda. The "memes" is just normalising discrimination against people as well as SA, and I hate how people consider this to be funny. People are so brainrotted nowadays they see anything as a joke, especially serious topics. Seeing this forum makes me happy that I never had TikTok or Instagram and joined the indieweb instead.

It's interesting how 20 years ago, the internet used to be an escape from real life, but now we've done a complete 180 and real life is an escape from the internet.

i genuinely couldn't agree more. the amount of times ive been harassed by someone on the internet baffles me every time.

i know this is a late post but genuinely i get so much harassed online by people throughout my time being on here tiktok is a prime example i get non stop death threats smear campaigns made about me i have been getting attacked for venting about my past experiences i have been called a liar and a manipulator and they just want to demand proof like it is tiring people and exhausting i was pushed to the point of ending it because of the amount of cyberbullying and cyberstalking And digital harassment no matter how many apologies i write suddenly it's not taking accontability the internet is a joke for real everyone wants to be the same and act negative and think they are bigger than the person they are arguing with they have no reasons to argue they just want an arguement to show how embarrasing they are as a person and i think all of this has to do with the pandemic in 2020 too but from my view of it the internet was not toxic but the minute tiktok got more toxic people are just so damn rude mad hateful we cannot have opinions anymore words are becoming insults to use against people i feel like if tiktok never existed the internet would have been a better space for people who feel safe online i am rarely online but still my point still stands with this statement
