Apparently, my tolerance for horror has reached its peak. Paranormal Activity 1 through 3 genuinely scared the pants off me. Then, for some reason, I ended up watching the remaining four films as well. And honestly, the first three were absolute peak horror. I don't know what happened after that, but it felt like the producers were trying to turn the franchise into a cash cow rather than preserve what made it so terrifying in the first place.
Hereditary scared the absolute shit out of me. Toni Collette in the dinner table scene is chef’s kiss
True that! along with the ceiling scene. Have you watched the blair witch project?
@kaal oh that scene gave me nightmares. Such a great subtle jumpscare! And no I haven’t, been meaning to for a while now 😅
Thought of another one from my childhood: the first Evil Dead movie. Scared the bajeezus out of me. I need to go back and rewatch and see if it still holds up lol. The other two Evil Dead movies are hilarious though! Haven’t seen any of the recent reboots yet
Midsommar.
Nearly entirely bright broad daylight, creepy AF
@Cranky Old Witch GOD that movie is so good. I think i mentioned it before to Kaal, but the scene that freaked me out the most was actually
*SPOILER ALERT!*
what the sister did to the whole family! for whatever reason that's always stuck in my brain as the most horrific part! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It helps to remember that all of the 'horror' in the film is window dressing. It's actually a break up movie masquerading as a horror! 😆
"that scene" - the horrific one - comes earlyish, un bright daylight, no soundtrack or horror inducing noise effects. Just 'matter of fact' and to me, that makes it so much more realistically visceral!
Also, I like to bookend this film with The Wicker Man (the original one with Christopher Lee)
As above so below had me on edge the whole time and tbh the paris catacombs are spooky by themselves
the witch (2015) came to mind. it's a great disturbing paranormal film, really enjoyed it
(i'm sure i've watched more disturbing paranormal ones since i loveee horror cinema <3 but this is the one that popped in my head lol)
@sniffmydecay that one scene really grossed me out. you know the one
Fucking LOVE that movie! (duh 😆)
The two teen actors were above and beyond! The Game of Thrones veterans were also excellent.
***SPOILER BELOW***
But what I loved most was that you spend the first act wondering "Is this just paranoia bought on by religious extremism coupled with severe isolation, or is something really going on here?" And before the third act it dawns on you, oh! It's BOTH! Cool!
@Cranky Old Witch you're never fully sure what's going on at first, then it all clicks!
barbarian. all i have to say about is it jesus christ what the fuck. truly disgusting, always love a good Justin Long appearance though!

I haven't watched any of the evil dead movies yet, but I'll definitely get to them. Tomorrow I'm planning to watch oculus and the autopsy of jane doe. It's been a month since I last watched a movie, so I'm pretty excited ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ

What was the creepiest scene in midsommar for you? I really need to rewatch it someday. I also want to recommend another movie with a similar Scandinavian vibe. the ritual (2017). No spoilers though
Truth? Tyere were some creepy scenes, of course, that I could list ... but it was the overall vibe!
So much of the vibe reminded me of the pagan campouts I used to go to back in the early 2000s!
The open fields, the bright sunlight, the sandy 'roads' for getting around, circle dances, rituals that outsiders wouldn't get, the young adults 'doing their thing' on their own in the woods, community getting together for communal cooking and what not, so very much!
A few key differences: Not one unified belief, no clothing coordination, and no murder*
*It was the New Jersey Pine Barrens, so *WE* didn't murder anyone, but there was a body discovered one year in a completely different area of the state park. NJ gonna NJ 😅

Another day, another attempt to ask Linkie, have you watched gonjiam yet?
