Thoughts on folks who gatekeep music?

I've been hearing about a lotta folks that gatekeep certain music artists to "Keep them Niche" but personally I don't think it's a good thing to do, since a lot of music artists work hard to create the songs we know and love. What are y'all's thoughts on this?

I hate it obviously, that's like rooting for someone's downfall.Β

Real tbh

Goth girl ticktok influencers wearing the uniform purely for clout and have barely listened to even a Bauhaus record and do nothing but trendy dances to modern popular 10 second clips of popular trash songs that have nothing to do with the life.Β

Says enough to me that gatekeeping is ABSURDLY neccisary. But it can be done without direct cruel intent.Β Β

I can see how this can be done properly, I'll take this into consideration as I actually never thought about this situation myself

Thank you so much for your thoughts!

@x_v4mp3y3lin3r_x

I agree with you on this one. I'm not goth so I don't have much knowledge on this kind of topic and I don't think I'm the best at making arguments. However, I agree with you that it's better to encourage folks to listen to the music than to try and hide it away. It makes a lot more sense to me honestly, and it is honestly the more mature thing to do in my personal opinionΒ

@x_v4mp3y3lin3r_xΒ  it was one example among many that many other than myself point out, and the fact that a gender happens to make up a visible aspect of an event in of itself is not acquiring a target of that gender its acknowledging an event in which said gender happens to have a heavy representation of individuals within said "trend", the fact that that particular example has a large number of women performing said act is secondary to the point.Β
Its something happening to every niche across the board, its pinterest boardification and fast fashion trending of every community across the spectrum of underground culture from said performative tiktok goth "girls" to being crust punk as a fashion statement despite its roots in being almost certainly an antithesis to that sort of throwaway normie market culture.Β
Its about the commodification and pageantry without respect for the lived in experience.Β

And yes, that very suggestion, that you suggest, can indeed itself be a part of said "gatekeeping". This is why i mentioned it doesnt have to be aggressively cruel intentioned as it once was.Β Β
That often, in those days, kinda became its own point and forgot the point itself and just became about the sport of bullying, and im not really advocating that. Some leeway has to be given to the new and inexperienced within a subculture for sure.Β
But if you get too lazze faire with this shit,
It turns to meaningless, puddle deep slop.Β

@βΈΈβΈΈβΈΈπ•Άπ–Žπ–‘π–‘π–Œπ–†π³π–’π–”π–™π–—π–”π–“βΈΈβΈΈβΈΈ on one hand i can agree that people should not claim to be part of subculutres or countercultures if they do not hold the values of them, but on the other hand you cant stop people from engaging with media. there is a difference between someone happening to like a band and not being a part of the same subculture or counterculture as the band's members, and someone claiming to be part of a subculture or counterculture when they obviously dont hold the same views needed to be part of them. you are conflating the two.

@RayFromTheNet
Nah i know full well people can enjoy the products of any niche community they desire without being part of it, and nothing i said blocks them from doing as much, they are irrelevant to anything said so far. But now that they have been brought up, yes, those people are absolutely valid.Β
They arent attempting to represent anything, so they are not of any concern to anyone.Β
Β
As for those making a trend out of a culture in the nature we have already spoken about, there are the values yes,
but not even necessarily has to be that. just an understanding of the ingredients and history and why they are there and their associations.Β
A respect for the effort of its fore bearers and its current dedicated constituents.Β
In that sense, you can have all sorts of values, long as your not attempting to shift the community in some sort of way in that direction. Your values being yours alone.Β
But yeah the history and dedication and common taste and community built upon those foundations are not a costume,
and its that costume that becomes the issue when its treated as near disposable, or as just a paint job.Β

If you just a person with a Xmal Dautchland album you really enjoy well, you arent relevant to that situation. Continue to enjoy your record, hypothetical person. :P.Β

@βΈΈβΈΈβΈΈπ•Άπ–Žπ–‘π–‘π–Œπ–†π³π–’π–”π–™π–—π–”π–“βΈΈβΈΈβΈΈ ok buddy. thanks for sharing your headcanons about me!!Β

@RayFromTheNet
not a word there was about you. You misunderstand.Β
"hypothetical person" means the hypothetical person in the discussion we are talking about.Β
That means neither me or you.Β

@βΈΈβΈΈβΈΈπ•Άπ–Žπ–‘π–‘π–Œπ–†π³π–’π–”π–™π–—π–”π–“βΈΈβΈΈβΈΈ ok pal

I'm not sure about this particular phenomenon. However, growing up on punk music and going to punk shows my whole life has given me a different perspective on gatekeeping.

IDGAF about people just starting out listening to punk. That's cool. We all started out listening to some band we don't love like we used to. We all eventually learn what is and isn't acceptable within a scene.

Conservative "punks" pretending that they're one of us is a decent enough reason to gatekeep in my opinion. Sometimes music is political and those politics are woven into the scene. They need to be jeered at. They need to be ostracized. They are attempting to infiltrate the community with their toxic ideology. It's a core tenant of their political stance to put themselves into scenes they aren't welcome in (due to their own obnoxious views) and play the victim when it's made clear they don't belong. That won't work in the punk scene.Β

I used to despise such behavior but after seeing so many tourists ruining entire genres, I understand better. I guess there needs to be a balance where gatekeeping helps something remain the same without detracting newcomers.Β

Sometimes, gatekeeper is necessary especially in the time like this where larpers always come and ruined everything!

@SavageReaper666

Personally I really despise calling someone a larper, I think it just became a buzzword that is never used correctly. However I know exactly what you were trying to say and I understand your argument. I may not agree with it but I can understand why someone would gatekeep from folks who wouldn't even consume the media properly

straight idiots

@XxEatm3wh1leimh0txX

Agreed

Music is for all of us. Gatekeepers suck the sweat off of dead men's testicles.Β

We were ALL 'new' at listening to music once, I don't care if someone is a deep fan or a casual. If you like a song, then PLAY IT!

And having been a working musician, if some 'fan' was declining to spread the word, I be so massively pissed! Working in music is a STRUGGLE, everyone wants to rip you off, last thing you need is 'fans' making it harder
