Thoughts on folks who gatekeep music?

I've been hearing about a lotta folks that gatekeep certain music artists to "Keep them Niche" but personally I don't think it's a good thing to do, since a lot of music artists work hard to create the songs we know and love. What are y'all's thoughts on this?

its a doubled edged sword, i mean in some cases there needs to be "gatekeeping" so a specific scene keeps their roots, but on the other hand, It can mean harm to the artists, since the reason they make music is for others to enjoy, I dont really see point in gatekeeping i will always share but i can see why some people choose to "gatekeep"

Not gonna lie, in this day and age, I understand why some music is being gatekeeped. Because once tiktok discovers it, it's trending for like 2 weeks, and then it's discharted. It's not like we are in the 90s anymore when a song was a HIT! and it would be around for a very long while. It also has to do with music being really accesible nowadays.

I personally don't like it when a song I've been listening to for a long time becomes a tiktok trend. Because music is more than just tunes, it's something to bond over, and making it trending and milking it out for a short time is in my opinion just bleh

I think the idea of gatekeeping is a little more nuanced than people give it credit. All i do is how my friends things i find and know of that i think they'd like. But when you see someone who is disingenuous about their interest in something i have no desire to show them real genuine things. Playing in bands, booking shows, working at a record store and being actively involved in music as a whole, but mostly punk, you see a lot of people with no real stake in anything, and are only there to look cool. To be in a cool place doing a cool thing, to look cool online. I have no sympathy for the people who just want a nice photo shoot on the weekend. Ive seen more than my fair share of DIY, generator shows shutdown because moronic tourists couldn't just let a good thing happen, couldn't stop themselves from blowing up the spot. Studs and spikes, patches, and leather, doesn't make you punk. Just showing up isn't enough either. Working at a record store as well, i show a lot of customers alot of weird niche shit, but its people who clearly care, and do more than just scrape the surface of music. Who collect records for love of the game, not just because it's hip and trendy. Plus not gatekeeping things especially in terms of physical media, greatly inflates the prices of things. New records cost roughly $25-$35 which sucks for consumers and REALLY sucks for independent artists who would just like to be pressed on vinyl. Gatekeeping as a concept isn't awful, some folk gatekeeper wrong, but leaving some folk ignorant from things that they could potentially ruin, isn't a bad thing in my eyes.

i like it when my favorite artists are "niche", but i'm never going to gatekeep them! that's just being an asshole.

The necessary vanguards of good music. Would you let the next scumfuck poser into your scene? obviously not.

It's important to not let undesireables into your subculture. Look at what happened to goth or punk, for example, they're in absolute ruin.

idgaf. i think people who use the word "larper" should get socked in the jaw because they sound stupid. i'd be fucking hyped if tiktok somehow made panic stepper blow up. i get the annoyance but that's because new fans (and fans and fandom in general) are generally annoying and people very much tend to tie their interests to their identity, often excessively.

It's a sad thing to do. When I consume art I do not think about the ways other people consume it. It doesn't matter to me.

Hey so I know I kinda just left this forum alone so I thought I'd reform my opinion to make more sense:

I don't really think posers are a big deal, now yes I can understand that they're annoying but no matter what you do they're still going to exist. So I don't really like the thought of gatekeeping music, especially since you never know if the person you're gatekeeping the music from would actually enjoy it or not, because you're not giving them the opportunity.

It's just my opinion, but frankly I just enjoy letting people get a taste of music I like to see if they like it or not.

Um, I really dislike it, but I can undersgand it !!!!!TO AN EXTENT!!!!! I believe that music should never be gatekept to a fan who actually wants to learn things and listen to new stuff, but i really hate seeing subcultures turn into a commodity to be bought and sold by people who dont care about it.. like I think I notice this got goth the most, and extreme metal as well,  I really dont mind if the stuff I like gets more popular (id like for that to happen!) But I dont want the image of it to get popular, and then the actual core of it getting left behind which .... ultimately really waters down the whole scene

Personally, im the kind of person who talks about my favorite artists so much to the point it bothers people, so I don't really gatekeep, since its not really in my nature to do that😢 also scenes getting watered down id mainly blame inaccurate media portrayals like movies and TV shows for that more than anything else anyways 

me personally i think they're quite annoying. just let people discover and enjoy music vro 

those people are litelary crazy. this music could have been a masterpiece or beeing a musician could have beenthis artist biggest dream but you don't want to shere because they're "your niche"

@RayFromTheNet they're using the word "you" in a broader sense the same way someone says "one" to refer to a non-specific person. they're not literally talking about you specifically here.

anyway, gatekeeping prevents music, scenes, culture, etc from being commodified and repackaged into a form easier for the masses to digest because it's as divorced from the source/context as possible. or so it's supposed to. it's why you're more likely to hear tropical house or a trap instrumental in a commercial for american eagle jeans/a car commercial than something like death metal.
