I've been hearing about a lotta folks that gatekeep certain music artists to "Keep them Niche" but personally I don't think it's a good thing to do, since a lot of music artists work hard to create the songs we know and love. What are y'all's thoughts on this?

It's a hard topic since some people that gatekeep think that tourist ruin genres and are posers. Even so, I don't think it's okay to do it with very niche bands; a lot of band really need to get more recognition to be able to keep doing music, if they don't get the support they need they end up disbanding, and the scenes die slowly. Also, if they start a music project is in order to eventually get a strong fanbase that allow them to keep doing what they like and live from the music, at the end of the day they also have bills to pay so.
The people who gatekeepe popular music are idiots to me but gate keeping a smaller artist is okay sometimes

I think there is a very important distinction to be made between gatekeeping and being an asshole to newcomers/elitist.
Gatekeeping is absolutely necessary to keep your subculture a proper subculture with set beliefs/practices and not just a vague vibe someone kind of connects to.

there's definitely a way to be an asshole while gatekeeping, but i do understand the feeling behind it (at least for me, sometimes when i feel gatekeepy its because im scared of seeming like a poser by association). doesn't give an excuse to be a dick about it tho.
I think the concept is (mostly) ridiculous. I am the opposite of a music gatekeeper. I will find niche bands and share them with everyone because I want to support local bands and help them get the attention they need to help their local scenes thrive. The only time I wont show someone new music is if their a bigoted pos cause we need less of those beef(bone)heads in our subcultures. People mostly only gatekeep music to feel superior to everyone else and I think those people need to get their egos checked to put it politely.
