Sci-Fi Rocks

Hii first blog,, I decided to write about what I'm reading/watching rn and how it's influencing my interest in worldbuilding!  

I spent most of this year reading a lot of short classics, cuz my uni's English dept gave away a ton of literature anthologies, but I also just finished the book Ready Player One. I read it in like two days and it made me remember how much I LOVEE the sci-fi genre!! I just adore reading/watching people's interpretations of how the future is going to look, especially now that we're in the age in which a lot of these movies & books were set. Now that I'm hyped for sci-fi again, I decided to finally start watching Doctor Who as well (it's available free on Hoopla btw), and I bought a book called "The Terraformers" by Annalee Newitz that I'm gonna start reading tomorrow. 

I've always been into post-apocalyptic stuff. Back in high school, I came up with a city that's circular in shape and that is surrounded by a vast wall. It was meant to be a closed, self-sustaining city run by a fascist system (heavily influenced by Incarceron by Catherine Fisher), but the system went to pot and now half of the city is still under fascism and the other half is kind of a feudal/anarchist situation. I drew a map of the entire city, and I filled a journal with information about how life works there. I even wrote a novella set in that city. Once I went to college, I learned more about food and energy systems, economics, etc., and was able to develop the City's system so that it actually made realistic sense lol. So I guess reading Ready Player One has reignited the interest that I have in sci-fi and postapocalyptic worlds! I've started writing drabbles set in the City again! 

Plus, I do a lot of nonfiction reading about how to build communities that don't rely on fossil fuels irl (The Transition Handbook, for example), and I just love to think about the ways we rely on energy and how our societies are shaped by tech and fuel. And sci-fi combines that commentary with badass fantasy tech, so I just really love it.
