Heaven's Gate
A pretty infamous mass suicide cult, you've probably heard it once or twice in your life before..
On March 26th 1997, 39 members of Heaven's Gate were found dead in a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, Cailfornia. Investigators found a recipe of the mixture that killed them, applesauce/pudding mixed in with anti-seizure drug Phenobarbital followed by vodka. Some bodies were found with plastic bags over their heads which suggest those members died from asphyxiation ontop of the poisoning which the drug Phenobarital takes a bit to actually kill a person. The suicides happened in three different groups over 3 dsays. All members were found wearing black shirts, sweatpants and new Nike Decade sneakers and each body had a purple cloth covering their bodies. This incident is one of the largest mass suicides in U.S. history.
Now you may be wondering why the hell did they commit mass suicide?
Marshshall Applewhite or Do for short, founder of Heaven's Gate, led the mass suicide and even particpated and died in it. In 1972 Applewhite met with Bonnie Nettles (she died in 1985 from cancer) and they basically were convinced that they were the "Two Witnesses" from the Book of Revelation (which is apparently 2 prophets spoke about in Revelation 11 who will spread and preach the word of god during the end-times and theyre killed but resurrected 3.5 days later (yk like jesus) and then they go up to heaven) and somehow they added UFO belief systems in the mix of that, and made their little cult in 1974

Their beliefs were something along the lines of.. YOU WANNA EVOLVE INTO THE "NEXT LEVEL"?? WELL GUESSS WHAT YOUR BODIES ARE JUST CONTAINERS!! YEAH, WANNA GO UP TO THE ALIEN SPACESHIP AND PARTY IT UP THERE IN HEAVEN WHILE THE SAD MORTALS DOWN THERE STAY FOR THE END TIMES?? WELL ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS KILL YOURSELF!!
Yeah, real sane thing to believe in.
Now in 1997 they thought the Hale-Bopp comet meant that their spaceship ride was here to pick em up and take them to the kingdom of Heaven. A former member received the videotapes and a letter from the group that had the mass suicide plan in it and they were probably like "holy shit wtf" and so they made an anonymous tip that led the police to the mansion.
