I was fortunate enough not to be present during the gore spams, so I can't really speak on that. What I will speak on is how An pretty much abandoned the site. I was one of those people who was holding out on hope and wanted to revive the site, but after coming here I realized we can’t keep blaming the users for Spacehey shortcomings. The site lacks basic social features, the messaging UI feels outdated and unappealing (IMO), and features like Top Blog is easily abused.
At the end of the day, it’s the responsibility of a site’s owner to keep users engaged. Yes, it’s a retro/indie platform, so the community plays a role in keeping it active. But it’s not entirely the users fault when the site lacks features and the creator of the site doesn’t even use it.
When the users are repeatedly making blog posts and raising concerns, there should be some form of response. Acknowledge it, communicate, be honest and transparent. This right here would solve so much, because I can handle bugs and bots. What I can't handle is a developer of a site completely ignored their community and problems.
And you can see when An was last online, like come now. I don't expect much but at least say something. Reassure the people. "Right now I'm dealing with college, but please know I see your concerns and will address them as soon as I can" --- this is ok, I would love to see this.
Instead we get silence.
